LEHIGH ATHLETICS Website: http://www.lehigh.edu Hotline: (610)758-LULlT SOFTBALL: Lehigh splits with Bucknell 11 MEN'S TENNIS: Team competes for league championship 11 STANDINGS: Complete league standings 11 SouthMountaineer Volume 11, Issue 27 Football Lehigh University Athletics Weekly April 22,1998 Abdullah signs with Tampa Bay One Lehigh football player is getting a chance to fulfill a lifelong dream. Running back Rabih Abdullah signed a two year free agent contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Abdullah said he learned a lot leading up to the draft. "It was very exciting for me to talk to the Buccaneer's staff." Abdullah said. "It is a once in a lifetime opportunity." Abdullah said he knows that he will have to put up his best effort to impress the Tampa Bay coaching staff. "I have to go there and work as hard as I can." Abdullah said. " I appreciate that somebody is giving me the opportunity to compete at this level." MAKING HIS MARK RABIH ABDULLAH Lehigh career leader in carries (672), yards (3,696), and yards per game (112). The two highest single-season rushing totals with 1,536 in 1995 and 1,225 in 1997 Career best 92 yard run against Cornell in 1994 Career best 266 yard rushing yards against Cornell in 1995 with five touchdowns Men's Lacrosse Lehigh returns back to form Lehigh's men's lacrosse team put up some big numbers in its 20-6 win over Virginia Military Institute last week. The team was returning from back- to-back losses to Army (14-11) and a mid-week lossto third-ranked Loyola in Maryland. As the stretch run begins with four games left on the schedule, Lehigh (5-4,2-1 Patriot League) will look to finish strong and hope for an Army loss to claim a share of the Patriot League title. Remaining on the schedule is a top- 15 Georgetown team that will certainly have revenge on its mind. Last season, Lehigh dampered #10 Georgetown's year with an 11 -10 win in the season finale at Georgetown. In this weekend's win over VMI, Ian MacGilvray, Mark Duncan and Doug McKerns all notched three goals in the victory. MacGilvray leads the team in points with 32 this season and Duncan leads the team in goals with 21. Both seniors are amongst the nation's leaders in their respective categories and sophomore goalie Todd Schreiner is among the country's best in goals against average and save percentage. Following the Georgetown game on April 21, the Mountain Hawks will take on Villanova at home on April 23, before hitting the road for league contests at Colgate on April 25, and Bucknell on May 2. Women's Lacrosse Team preaches community on and off the field Jessica Schmidt by Jenn Ranch Sports Communications Office As if balancing practice, games and a school work isn't enough, the women's lacrosse team somehow finds time to give back to the community. Members of the team have been volunteering their free time to six different organizations since the beginning of the year. This year's biggest effort is an on going effort throughout the season. The team has named the program, "Common Goals" and proceeds benefit the Allentown Girls Club. The program began in the fall when the team took the girls to a basketball game. The girls watched last Saturday's lacrosse game against Holy Cross. "A lot of the girls didn't even know what lacrosse was," senior Heather Towner said. The bulk of the program is based on the women's team scoring. Pledges are being made by parents, students, alumni and anyone who wants to donate to this good cause for every goal that is scored by the team. Heather Towner For example, if Elizabeth Brodbeck collects $ 1 from a friend for every goal she scores and she scores 25,- she will receive $25 from that donor. Towner is leading this program and has sent letter out to family and friends to encourage them to help these girls out. She said that the girls had never seen females play sports in person and hopes that this experience will help encourage them to become athletes. "It's been a lot of fun," Towner said "It ties us in with the community. It gives the girls a chance to expand their horizons." This effort will continue until the end of the season. Donations can be sent to Jackie Keeley, Taylor Gym, 641 Taylor St. Beth., Pa. 18015. Checks should be made to Lehigh University. Earlier this year the team participates in the Broughal Middle School Book Drive. Organized by senior Jessica Schmidt, the team collected over 100 books for a new library at the Bethlehem school. Letters were sent out to parents that books for the third and fourth grade level were needed. The school was so overwhelmed by the support they have placed the name of the team in the inside cover of the books. "We're helping the community because we're a part of it," Schmidt said. "It's important that we give back Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week Elizabeth Brodbeck is one of the many women's lacrosse players involved in community service efforts to the community and really get involved." The team also raised over $1400 participating in the Lehigh Valley 5K Breast Cancer run, as well as volunteering at the Victory soup Kitchen. This event was organized by Brodbeck who along with a few teammates made dinner and helped serve it to those in need. Although the team only went once, Brodbeck said they are willing to do it as much as the Soup Kitchen needs. "We're there if they need us," she said. "It was great as a team to do it together," she said. "It not only looks good for our program but we want to do it. It's a bonding thing." The lacrosse team also participates in the Community Outreach by Athletes who Care about Helping Program (C.O.A.C.H.) which is an athletic department service program that operates in accord with the National Consortium for Academics and Sports. Its goals are to help student-athletes and their peers make informed decisions about their education, alcohol and other drug issues, and other factors which would affect reaching their full potential. NOTES: Lehigh defeated Holy Cross 18-6, Saturday at Goodman campus. Elizabeth Brodbeck led the Mountain Hawks with six goals...Brodbeck won Patriot League Player of the Week honors for her effort...The win was Lehigh's third straight and first Patriot League win of the season...Senior goalie Carly Lynch took home Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week for her 14 save performance against Holy Cross and 17 save effort against St. Joseph's.
