Lehigh Athletics Website: http://www.lehigh.edu Hotline: (610) 758-LULU Olympic Sports Report Service Electric, Ch. 2, Thursday 7:30p.m This Week: Field hockey and Golf SOCCER: Men clinch playoff berth 10 FOOTBALL: Team balances academics and athletics 11 STATISTICS: The season's complete scores South Mountaineer Volume 11, Issue 10 Lehigh University Athletics Weekly October 28,1997 Football Lehigh ends "The Streak" Dartmouth's 22-game unbeaten string comes to an end by Glenn Hofmann Director of Sports Communications All week long there was talk about Dartmouth's 22-game unbeaten streak which was the longest in the country and second longest in Division I-AA history. All week long Lehigh talked about wanting to end the streak and about wanting to watch ESPN's Chris Fowler announce the score on that network's college football roundup. Lehigh got its wish Saturday night after a very impressive 46-26 victory over the Big Green on a raw Saturday afternoon in Hanover, NH. All night Saturday everyone in Bethlehem and surely Hanover were talking about what happened on the Memorial Field turf. What happened was that the Lehigh offense continued to play at a masterfully high level. "The play of our offense is really improved over the last couple of weeks," an elated head coach Kevin Higgins said after the game. "Our quarterback is making great decisions at the line of scrimmage. Our receivers are stepping up and making catches at critical times." And the Lehigh running game is on the move. Coming into the game no team had rushed for 100 yards against the Big Green. Senior Rabih Abdullah passed that mark himself. Abdullah rushed for 186 yards, setting as new Lehigh career rushing record. He surpassed the mark previously held by Rod Gardner. Abdullah has now gained 3,194 yards in his Lehigh career and this performance ranked right up there with many of his others. He also scored four touchdowns for the Abdullah became Lehigh's All-Time leading rusher with second time this season and third time in his career. "Our offensive line took this game real personally," Abdullah said. "They went out and opened a lot of holes. I think coming into the game Dartmouth was giving up only 48 yards a game. I took that personal and was not going to let myself be held to that." While the offensive line was opening up big holes for Abdullah, sophomore quarterback Phil Stambaugh was throwing darts all over the field. For the day Stambaugh completed 27-of-37 passes for 272 yards and one touchdown. Even more impressive is that several times Stambaugh threw completions to his second and third receivers. He has certainly come of age. In fact since the first half of the Colgate game Stambaugh has completed 70% of his passes for 1,120 yards, nine touchdowns and only one interception. Junior Joe Falzone led Lehigh with eight catches as he was one of seven players to be on the receiving end of a Stambaugh pass. 3,194 yards credit: Joe Ryan And defensively Lehigh again stiffened in the second half allowing the Big Green only one third quarter touchdown. Junior Sam Brinley had two interceptions and in all Lehigh forced five Dartmouth turnovers. For all of the heroics this game was close through three quarters as Dartmouth led 26-25. But in the fourth quarter Lehigh made the big plays scoring 21 unanswered points. The biggest play may have been on fourth down with under eight minutes remaining and Lehigh up 33-26. At the Dartmouth 32-yard line Lehigh was faced with a fourth and 11. Coach Higgins elected to go for the first down and Stambaugh completed the pass to junior tight end R.J. Ryan for the first down. Three plays later Abdullah scored on a 12-yard scamper and Lehigh had increased its lead to 39-26. 1997 Football Schedule Sept. 13 at Fordham L, 35-42 Sept. 20 at Towson State W, 16-14 Sept. 27 HARVARD % L, 28-35 Oct. 4 at Colgate L, 28-61 Oct. 11 PENNSYLVANIA W, 24-7 Oct. 18 at Hofstra L, 38-45 Oct. 25 at Dartmouth W 46-26 Nov.l at Bucknell ■gM™L-rr 12:30 Nov. 8 HOLY CROSS 12:30 Nov. 15 DELAWARE 12:30 Nov. 22 LAFAYETTE "graT 12:30 Upcoming Satellite Coordinate Info: Bucknell Game KU Band, Telestar 5, Transponder 12 Lafayette Game KUBand SBS6 Transponder 11 C-Band Galaxy 3R Transponder 18 Lehigh/Dartmouth Game Stats Score By Quarters 1 2 3 4 F LU(3-4) 14 8 3 21 46 DC(5-1) 10 9 7 0 26 LEHIGH DC 26 First Downs 15 178 Net Rushing 113 272 Net Passing 114 450 Total Yards 227 5-48 Penalties 5-55 2/0 Fumbles/Lost 3/2 3 Interception By 1 31:40 Possession 28:20 1 Sacks by 5 Game Leaders Rushing: L: Adullah 32-186, Jean 2-6 D: Karczewski 22-64, Corso 7-33 Passing: L: Stambaugh 27-37-272,1TD D: Sellers 11 -26-114,1 TD Receiving: L: Falzone 8-97, Fedorcha 6-32, Baker 3-48, Braswell 3-39 D: Morton 4-42, Ellis 3-53 Tackles: L: Brinley 12, Kmieciak 9 D:Walz 13, Jefferson 12 Patriot League Summary Last Week: Lehigh 46 Dartmouth 26 Army 35 Colgate 27 Bucknell 18 Holy Cross 6 Lafayette 38 Towson 0 Cornell 45 Fordham 13 This Week: LEHIGH at Bucknell Colgate at Holy Cross Towson at Fordham New Haven at Lafayette Standings: Colgate Bucknell Holy Cross Fordham LEHIGH Lafayette Towson League 3-0 3-0 1-1 2-2 1-2 1-3 0-3 Overall 4-2 7-0 3-4 2-6 3-4 2-6 2-5
