She didn't divert from that pattern Thursday night in the collegiate women's 3,000 meters at the 103rd running of the Penn Relays. Cogswell led the first six laps of the eight-lap race on the all-weather Franklin Field track before dropping into fourth. Her career-best time of 9 minutes and 49.45 seconds came against a field that included runners from some of the higher- profile Division I programs in the U.S. "I tried to run the exact opposite of what I usually do, but I couldn't help it," said Cogswell, a sophomore who cut nearly 10 seconds off her previous best. "I went right out to the front again." Joe Ryan Ellen Cogswell placed among some of the best college racers in the U.S. Cogswell paced Tennessee's Kristen Ritter and Rachel Rieke of Northern Arizona for most of the race until Rieke surged into the lead with about 800 meters to go. Rieke won in 9:42.35 with Ivana Skladana of South Carolina (9:45.42) second and Ritter (9:45.60) third. The reigning 3,000 and 5,000- meter Patriot League champion, Cogswell is expected to defend her titles in both events at the conference meet at Lehigh this weekend. The Lehigh quartet of freshman Tara Santoroski of Northampton, Kelly Lyons, Stephanie Nelson and Karen Doris placed second in their section of the women's 4x400 relay in 4:06.44 Amanda Sage of Lehigh was 24th in the shot put (36-5). Teammate Jen Wawrzonek was 29th in the hammer throw (136-2). Lehigh finished second in its section of the 4x100 relays. The team included Megan Gayer, Karen Doris, Eleni Androilatos and Allison Sheniak. As Lehigh's spring sports season enters the final stretch the Mountain Hawks have assured themselves of another successful year on the court and field. The women's lacrosse team recovered from a 17-6 loss to Lafayette to beat Drexel 11-7. The Mountain Hawks then dropped a game to Duke 14-5, evening their record at 7-7. Lehigh will play Delaware on the road and West Chester at home before possibly entering the ECAC tourney. The men's lacrosse team takes a two-game win streak into its game with Providence Wednesday on Goodman campus. They close the regular season on the road against Georgetown on Saturday. The men's tennis team took fifth place at the Patriot League Tennis Team Championship by beating Lafayette 4-0. They will travel to Drexel for the season finale. SOFTBALL Bison stampede to Patriot League title, end Lehigh's four-year reign Joe Ryan Coach Fran Troyan coached a new starting infield this season. by Keith Groller The Morning Call If, indeed, the Patriot League Softball Tournament will no longer be held at Patriots Park as rumors suggest, then both Bucknell and Colgate got a good, long look at the southAllentown diamond Sunday. In fact, the two teams played like they never wanted to leave. Bucknell won the league crown with an amazing 4-1,19-inning victory over Colgate. In the lengthy process, Bucknell ended Lehigh's four-year reign as Patriot League champs. The top-seeded Mountain Hawks were eliminated by Colgate 5-0 in the day's first game. The Red Raiders then extended the double-elimination tourney to the limit by beating the Bison 5-2 in the first game of the championship series. After Melaine Kulis blanked Lehigh 1-0 on Saturday, Bucknell thought it would see Lehigh again. But the Bison will have to wait until next spring to see the Brown and White since Colgate made quick work of Lehigh in Game 1. Tara McGoff stopped the defending champs on a seven-hitter, while five Engineer errors led to five unearned Raider runs. "It really burns right now and it's disappointing that we weren't able to come out and play to the level that everybody's used to," said Lehigh head coach Fran Troyan after his team finished up at 21-18. "But the Lehigh Valley should rest assured that Lehigh softball will remain one of the top programs on the East Coast. We've got to do some things to improve as a program, but we've got to remember that we lost our entire starting infield from last year. And they were four all-league players who had been together for four years." Amanda Wessner, an Allen grad making her final collegiate appearance had three hits out of the lead- off spot. The Mountain Hawks put the first two runners on base in three separate innings, but could not score. Lehigh went 1-2 in the tourney, scoring just three runs in the three games. Lehigh went the final 15 innings without scoring. "There were a lot of 'ifs' but when you don't execute, you don't win," Troyan said. "We hit the ball fairly hard at times, but right at people. Two weeks ago, when we were playing well, those balls were finding the gaps. You can't win when you can't score and we didn't play very well defensively." Besides Wessner, Lehigh said good-bye to seniors Jen Viglietta and Pennridge grad Karen Schaefer. "We wanted to win this again obviously," Troyan said. "But it's probably a good thing for the league that somebody else will be representing the Patriot League in the play-in series [with the Ivy League champion]. We'll be rooting for them."
