HALL OF FAME BANQUET This Saturday, at 4:30, Lehigh will induct its fifth class of inductees into the Hall of Fame. The banquet will be held at Rathbone. LACROSSE: Lehigh defeats seventh-ranked Georgetown, 12 TRACK: Lehigh men finish fourth, women fifth, 11 Lehigh Athletics awards distributed at annual banquet, 11 South Mountaineer Volume 10, Issue 25 Lehigh University Athletics Weekly May 7,1997 Lehigh Completes Campaign with Win Over No. 7 Georgetown Mountain Hawks complete season with 11-4 mark With the final three goals of the game, the Lehigh men's lacrosse team ended its 1997 season with four straight wins, capped with an 11- 10 win over the Head Coach seventh-ranked John McCloskey Georgetown Hoyas in the season finale at Georgetown. John Fowler's goal with 32 seconds left in the contest lifted Lehigh to the victory. The Mountain Hawks scored the final three goals of the game and outscored the Hoyas 8- 2 in the second half. The win puts Lehigh's final record at 11-4 and a top-25 standing in the national rankings. The squad finished second in the Patriot League with a 4-1 mark. Brad Baker, Mark Duncan, and Vince Geppi led Lehigh with two goals each. Duncan, at press time, continues to lead the nation in goals per game with a 3.6 average with 54 goals in 15 games. His total of 54 goals also leads the nation. Duncan, Lehigh's lone first-team All-Patriot League member, also scored the second-most goals in the nation in a single game as he notched six goals in Lehigh's 18-11 win over Providence College earlier this week. In addition to Duncan's first-team selection, Lehigh placed five players on the second unit. Brad Baker, who led the league in assists, was tabbed a second-team member at attack. Vince Geppi was named second- team at midfield. Geppi, one of the team's tri- captains, was among the top five scorers on the squad with 20 goals and 14 assists. A pair of Lehigh defenders were named to the second team with Jared Harrison and Doug Mylowe receiving the honor. Harrison recorded one assist on the season and Mylowe scored five goals as two of the best defenders in the Patriot League. The team opened the season winning six of its first seven games with wins over VMI, Farifield, nationally ranked Stony Brook, St. Joseph's, including league wins over Holy Cross and a 20-1 thrashing of Lafayette College. The only losses came from some of the top schools in the nation in UMBC, Army, Loyola, and Butler, with the final wins over Villanova, Colgate, Providence, and seventh- ranked Georgetown. Joe Ryan Spring Teams Honor Athletes At the annual spring/winter banquet (swimming held a separate banquet), the Lehigh University teams presented their Player of the Year, Scholar-Athlete, and Coaches Awards to the members of their teams. The "Player of the Year" award goes to the team MVP. The "Scholar- Athlete" award is earned by one who exemplifies the ideal of the scholar- athlete. The "Coaches" Award is given to the one who made significant contributions to the team.
