DID YOU KNOW? Wrestling senior co-captain Jason Kutz has won 17 straight matches this season. The Lehigh record is 50 in a row, set by Mike Caruso from 1964-67. Winter Sports Schedules/Taylor Gym Update Page 9 Page 10 Page 11 Men's Hoop Feature Wrestling/Indoor Track Feature/Swimming and Diving South Mountaineer Volume 9, Issue 16 Lehigh University Athletics Weekly January 24,1996 LU Women near the top Showdown with Holy Cross this week for 1st place By Michele Mount Sports Communications Assistant This is a big week for the Lehigh University women's basketball team. The Mountain Hawks' schedule includes a showdown with arch-rival Lafayette on Wednesday night and on Saturday, defending league champion Holy Cross visits Stabler. Lehigh, at 2-1 in the Patriot League, is only one-half game out of first place behind the Crusaders. "Every game we play in the league is important," said head coach Sue Troyan. "There is a lot of parity, I don't think one team is going to dominate like in the past." Troyan is right. Each team has at least one loss with three-quarters of the games yet to be played. The Mountain Hawks started the week off right with an 81-57 trouncing of Columbia on Monday night. Kim Behrens scored a game- high 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Kelly Madden chipped in with 15 points, including a perfect 6- of-6 from the foul line. Jessica Mudry added seven assists and five steals to go along with her eight points. With that win, Lehigh's ninth of the season, the Mountain Hawks equal the squad's combined win total from the previous two seasons. The turnaround of the women's basketball program can be credited to the up-tempo, pressure style basketball and the team's new-found confidence that have both been implemented by the rookie coaching staff. f- — — — — — — — — — — — -| A tale of two seasons 37.8% 25.7% 66.3% 37.6 61.5 11.3 PG% 3-pt FG% FT% RPG PPG APG 1995-93 43.2% 29.9% 7i.7% 41.3 67.5 13.8 "When Coach Troyan took over, she implemented a different style of basketball to one that suited our athletic ability," explains Mudry. "It has really payed off for us and by playing our game, we have gained a lot of confidence in each other." Although the Mountain Hawks have achieved a lot of success this Junior Kari Herzog plays tough man-to-man defense. Ken White year compared to the past couple of years, they still want bigger and better things to happen. "There is definitely a sense of urgency, especially for Jess and Kim," claims Troyan. "They're the two seniors, so they can't wait until next year. We have reevaluated our goals and definitely believe that we have a good chance for making a run for the league title, especially since everyone is so competitive." In last week's action, the Mountain Hawks defeated Colgate last Wednesday night, 68-58, at Stabler Arena. Lehigh led 31-24 at halftime and fought off a tough Red Raider comeback en route to the victory. Behrens scored 16 points and Mudry added 11 points, six assists and grabbed a career-high 13 boards. On Saturday, Lehigh suffered its first Patriot League loss, 76-63, at the hands of Bucknell in Lewisburg. Once again, Behrens led the team in scoring with 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Mudry and Madden chipped in with 11 and 10 points, respectively. This is the week for Lehigh to make its mark. If they keep playing the way they have been, the Mountain Hawks will gain the respect that they have earned. Notes - Lehigh needs just one more win to tie the most victories in a season since joining the Patriot League. The Engineers went 10-18 during the 1990-91 season.... In Monday night's game against Columbia, Alysia Decker scored a career- high six points, while freshman Christine Lawlor, sidelined all season due to illness, played in her first collegiate game... As a team, Lehigh leads the league in free throw shooting percentage (71.7%)...Jessica Mudry is ranked among the best in the ECAC in steals (5th- 3.4), 3-pt fg% (5th- 37.1%) and assists (6th- 5.6). Jessica Mudry is second in the league in assists with 5.6 per game.
