DID YOU KNOW? The last defensive player to be named the Most Valuable Player of the Lehigh- Lafayette game was Lehigh's defensive end Mike Crowe in 1980. Winter Sports Schedules Page 9 Wrestling Season Preview Page 10 Lehigh-Lafayette Football Game Preview Page 11 South Mountaineer Volume 9, Issue 11 Lehigh University Athletics Weekly November 14,1995 Another Explosive Effort Aylsworth throws five TD's in 51-21 drubbing of HC by Glenn Hofmann Sports Communications Director Every week you feel like you've seen it all when it comes to the Lehigh offense, and then another week comes and another even bigger effort. Saturday against Holy Cross the Lehigh offense racked up the fifth-most total yards in school history (652) en route to an easy 51- 21 victory over Holy Cross. The 7-3 Engineers improved their record to 4-0 in the Patriot League and clinched at least a share of the Patriot championship. The introduction of the Lehigh Mountain Hawk mascot featured fireworks, but those weren't even close to the all-out assault the Lehigh offense dished out. Senior quarterback Bob Aylsworth threw five touchdown passes for the third time in his career. It also marked the seventh time in his career that he threw at least four TD passes in a game. For the day Aylsworth accumulated 351 yards through the air. "Obviously he's playing really well," head coach Kevin Higgins said of his All-League quarterback. "The mental preparation is the key to his succcess. He looks at so much film during the week that he understands what teams are trying to do to us and gets us into the right plays. He was throwing into the wind today and converting." Once again Aylsworth's favorite target was senior Brian Klingerman. The 5-7 All-American turned in a pair of diving catches sure to be two of the best-ever at Goodman Stadium as part of his seven reception 131 yard receiving effort. "Outstanding," is all Higgins could say when asked about Klingerman's performance. There's no questions those were some big- time catches. It seems every game he makes catches we've never seen before and all in critical situations. Brian's as competitive as any athlete I've been around." And unlike past years where the offensive exploits would end with the passing game, junior Rabih Abdullah again turned in a monumental rushing effort. Abdullah, after fumbling his first carry of the afternoon went on to carry 24 times for 193 yards. That doesn't include an 84-yard touchdown run that was called back. All-in-all it was truly a masterful offensive performance made easier by an offensive line that allowed only two sacks and totally dominated the line- of-scrimmage. "One thing that was critical were our third down conversions in critical situations that kept dirives going," Higgins said. For the day Lehigh converted 10-of-14 on third down or 71%. Lehigh also had excellent production from the fullback position as the combination of Chris Ashby, John Tobias and Raphael Stillings combined for 84 yards, the most from that position all season.
