Lehigh senior quarterback Bob Aylsworth put on a dazzling passing show while the UMass running game set a school record for rushing yards. All- in-all 80 points and 980 yards of offense were accumulated in the Minutemen's 44-36 victory over Lehigh, which left both teams with 5-3 records. "Considering the field conditions and the quality of our opponent I'd have to say this was our best offensive effort of the season," head coach Kevin Higgins said. "Our offensive line did an excellent job of protecting Bob (Aylsworth). Bob picked up the blitzes real well and we were able to control what we wanted to do on offense." "Aylsworth is just an outstanding player," UMass head coach Mike Hodges said. "We threw the book at him and really didn't stop him. Their offensive execution is incredible. He (Aylsworth) just doesn't miss. In my four years here he's as good as we've played against." Aylsworth threw four touchdown passes for the sixth time in his Lehigh career and his 357 passing yards marked the seventh time he has thrown for over 300 yards. Once again senior Brian Klingerman was Aylsworth's Bob Aylsworth threw for four TD's and 357 yards favorite target as the 5-7 Ail- American tied a career high with 12 catches for 170 yards. It was the eighth 100-yard receiving game of his career. And this offensive show wasn't just through the air. Junior running back Rabih Abdullah reached the 100-yard mark for the sixth time this year by gaining 128 yards on 22 carries. Abdullah also became only the fifth Lehigh player ever to rush for 1,000 yards in a season. While Lehigh offered a balance of offensive fireworks, UMass did all of its damage on the ground. In fact, the Minutemen failed to complete a pass. But it didn't matter because Ken While PATRIOT LEAGUE STANDINGS Institution Leaque Overall LEHIGH 2-0 5-3 Bucknell 2-1 5-3 Fordham 2-1 4-4-1 Lafayette 1-1 2-5-1 Holy Cross 0-2 1-7 Colgate 0-2 0-8 Last Week: UMass 44 Lehigh 36 Bucknell 30 Lafayette 11 Fordham 17 Holy Cross 10 Army 56 Colgate 14 This Week at Fordham 12:30 vs. Holy Cross 1:00 vs. Lehigh 12:30 vs. Colgate 1:00 at Bucknell 1:00 at Lafayette 1:00 they gained a school record 515 yards rushing thanks to Frank Alessio, who gained 206 yards, and Matt Jordan, who gained 174 yards on just six carries. Lehigh schedules scholarship opponents so it can measure where the program generally is. The Brown and White proved it can now compete evenly with the Yankee Conference. Still, there were two key periods in the game which eliminated any chance Lehigh would have of pulling off the upset. Lehigh led 14-7 late in the first half thanks to a pair of Aylsworth TD's to junior tight end David Meurer (11 yards) and freshman wide-out Deron Braswell (20 yards). Over the the next seven minutes UMass scored three touchdowns. Lehigh's offense sputtered for the only time all day and the Engineers also fumbled a kickoff when they trailed 20-14. The result of this bad stretch was a 26-14 UMass halftime lead that would have been larger had the Minutemen not missed two extra points and been unsuccessful on a two-point conversion attempt. UMass extended its lead to 32- 14 early in the second half, but Lehigh didn't quit and by the time Abdullah rushed 30-yards for a touchdown and Aylsworth hit Meurer for a two-point conversion with 12:08 left, Lehigh found itself down by only eight points. Then with 7:22 left Lehigh began a critical drive from its ovn 11-yard line. Aylsworth guided the Brown & White to the Umass 35- yard line and then hit Braswell for a 24-yard gain to the Minutemen 11-yard line, but Braswell was hit from behind, and fumbled the ball to UMass. Lehigh's defense stiffened and forced a punt, but starting from its own 41-yard line, Lehigh would not complete another pass.
