The Engineers had a much easier time winning the 1995 title than it had in previous years. In 1993 and '94, the Brown and White had to win three games on Championship Sunday, this year they won three games- period. Lehigh defeated Army, 8-0, and Holy Cross, 8-2, on Saturday, and beat Army again in the championship game on Sunday. "It might not have been as thrilling as it was the last couple of years when we had to win three on the last day coming through the loser's bracket, but I'll take it," said Lehigh head coach Sue Troyan. The Engineers provided a touch of suspense in Sunday's game when shortstop Kim Miller and center fielder Amanda Wessner collided while chasing down a bloop hit by Army's lead-off hitter Dana Orvis in the top of the first inning. The Lady Knights capitalized pn the Engineers' miscue by scoring two runs on three hits. For the first time in the tournament, the Brown and White were faced with a come from behina situation. "I felt great. I didn't w"ant to lose the last game," said Lehigh pitcher and co-captain, Nina Rems. "We had no doubt about coming back. We have a very strong team. If we started panicking, then ■ HI tyj/fi'&iffn things would have gone downhill, but we had confidence and knew we were going to win. Today's game was no different than any other game." Rather than one big inning, the Engineers chipped away at Army inning-by-inning. The Engineers scored one run in the third, fourth and fifth innings and added three insurance runs in the sixth. It was fitting that Rems scored the winning run as the 1995 Patriot League Pitcher-of-the-Year was also the tournament MVP. Rems, (16-5), allowed two runs and eight hits while striking out two Lady Knights in the championship game. She was on the mound in the Engineers' first round game against Army where she gave up just three hits and registered her seventh shutout of the season. Lehigh's season is not over. On Thursday, they travel to West Hempstead, N.Y., to face Hofstra University, winners of the North Atlantic Conference. The winner of the best-of-three series will advance to the NCAA regionals. Coach Troyan is excited about the Hofstra series. "This is a great way for the seniors to go out. But we're not done yet. If there's a year we can sneak up on someone and get to the NCAAs, this is the year. In the past, we were just happy to be there, now things are different, although Hofstra has a great program." With a record of 37-10 and eight all-league players, you could bet the Engineers have a great shot at advancing to the tournament. I RlPJLAt QOlertW! R€P£ftT tttJS Nina Rems (above left) was selected the tournament's most valuable player, while some Engineer faithful showed their appreciation of the Lehigh softball legacy with this banner that hung on the outfield fence during the tournament.
