The 1993 Patriot League champion softball team set the previous mark at 29. The Engineers have rolled through their league schedule, suffering only one loss against nine wins. The only setback coming to second-place Holy Cross 8-7. This weekend's games in the Bronx, N.Y., were relatively low scoring for a Lehigh team that entered the week's competition ranked third nationally in that category, but the outcome was familiar. It took Lehigh nine innings to get their engines running on Saturday afternoon. Both the Engineers and the Rams were hitless through early innings, and scoreless heading into the top ofthe ninth. Designated player Patty Godwin got the rally started with a single, and rightfielder Natalie Nestor followed with a bunt single. Engineer first baseman Jessica Feigley finished things off with a three-run homer to give Lehigh the 3-0 win. Nina Rems went the distance on the mound, yielding only five hits on the way to her 13th victory. The second game went scoreless through three innings until catcher Karen Kascinski knocked out a two-run homer, bringing Godwin in from third base. Fordham answered with a run of its own, its first of the series, manufactured by a single and a double. The run would also be the Rams' last as Engineer pitcher Jill Lewis wrapped up her 12th win, allowing only three hits in addition to the run. The Engineers played the double- header without the services ofthe team's, and the nation's, leading hitter Kim Miller who was away on an academic field study. As the team's second leading hitter, currently batting .398, Godwin stepped up with four hits, and two runs scored over the doubleheader. "Although we didn't really get the bats going, the team pulled together defensively, and Karen Schaefer stepped it up playing for Kim (at shortstop)," said head coach Sue Troyan. The doubleheader with Army that was scheduled to wrap up the regular season on Sunday afternoon was rescheduled for Tuesday. The Patriot League Tournament begins Friday and continues through Sunday at patriots Park in Allentown. As the tourament's first seed, the Engineers received a bye in Friday's first round and will play their first game on Saturday morning at 8:00. Freshman Patty Godwin picked up four hits and scored two runs in Saturday's doubleheader at Fordham. Photo by JOE RYAN ECAC tourney extends women's lacrosse season The Lehigh University women's lacrosse team has accepted an invitation to play in the annual Eastern College Athletic Association (ECAC) lacrosse tournament Saturday and Sunday at New Haven, Conn. The Engineers, 12-3 and co-champions of the Patriot League with Lafayette, will participate along with Georgetown, Colgate and host Yale. They won 18-7 over Colgate earlier in the season and lost to Georgetown, 15-10. Junior Jill Altshuler (left) shares the team lead in scoring with senior Liz Brode. The two Engineer stars also lead the nation in scoring with 85 points each on the season. Photo by JOE RYAN "Since we don't have a championship tournament in our league this is the only opportunity for post-season play," says coach Jackie Keeley. "We remember that loss to Georgetown and it would be exciting to play them again." The Engineers will get their shot at Georgetown in the 2:00 game on Saturday afternoon. The Championship game is set for Sunday at 1:00 p.m. This is the first time since 1989, and only the second time since women's lacrosse was added to the sports program in 1975, that Lehigh has gone into the ECAC tournament. Two of the nation's most prolific scorers in NCAA Div. I ranks, Jill Altshuler and Liz Brode, spearhead the Engineers' attack. They had identical totals this season, each scoring 64 goals and adding 21 assists for 85 points.
