SOUTH MOUNTAINEER Volume 37, Issue 21 March 29,1995 Softball on fire in Florida By Michele Mount '95 Lehigh Sports Information The Lehigh University Women's Softball Team has started the season off with a bang. During their annual spring trip to Fort Myers, FL, the Engineers compiled a record of 9-3, including a three-game sweep of Fairfield University. Lehigh's formula for success was a combination of veteran leadership and rookie talent. The Brown and White were led offensively by Allentown, Pa. native, Kim Miller. The junior shortstop, connected for 25 hits, including 12 for extra bases, drove in 27 runs and scored 21 times. In addition, Miller was a perfect 9-for-9 in stolen base attempts. She also leads the team defensively in assists with 38. According to Miller, "the warm weather really agrees with me. I hit much better in Florida, but I am prepared to suck it up now that it is a little colder." In a 17-9 win over Manhattan, Miller hit a single, double, triple and home run, scored five runs and knocked in six RBI's. Similarly, she hit a single, two doubles and a home run in a 9-4 win over Fairfield University. Junior Jessica Feigley was another asset at the plate. The Allentown, Pa., native connected on 15 hits, including two doubles and three triples, while driving in ten teammates. The first baseman leads the team defensively with 112 putouts. Feigley's best outing in Florida was in Lehigh's 9-0 loss against Fairfield University, where she registered a 2-for-3 performance at the plate with a triple and two RBI's. She also made seven putouts. The pitching staff was led by freshmen sensations Patty Godwin and Jill Lewis, who combined for a 7-0 record in the Sunshine State. Godwin struck out 12 batters in three games, giving up only three runs, including four scoreless innings against Fairfield on March 16. The Fountain Valley, Cal., native also produced at the plate with 16 hits and 5 RBI's. Godwin is second on the team with ten stolen bases. Lewis, a native of Prospect Park, Pa., pitched a no-hitter in her first game as an Engineer in a 9-0 win over Fairfield. In four games, she allowed just one run, and struck out 11 batters. In the 17-9 victory over Manhatten, Lewis entered the game in the second inning with the scored tied at seven. She struck out two batters and gave up only one earned run. Coach Sue Troyan was more than pleased with -- see SOFTBALL, pg. 14. All-Americans Again Men's Tennis Nets Seventh Win Senior co-captains Rick Hepp (left) and Steve Cassidy (right) earned All-American honors once again as they led the Engineers to a 17th-place finish in the NCAA Championships in Iowa City> lA. The two are shown here with head coach Bob Latessa being honored for surpassing the 100-win plateau. For a Nationals recap, see page 15. The men's tennis team has won its last seven matches, including Sunday's 7-0 win over Mount St. Mary's to up its record to 7-3. The Engineers returned north on March 21 to drop Seton Hall 6-1, and ace St. Joseph's 7-0 following their spring trip to Hilton Head, S.C., where they won four matches. The Saab brothers, Saleem and co-captain Fred, lead the Engineers with eight wins each. Co- captain Art Comstock and Malcolm Goodman each have seven wins on the season. Comstock and both Saabs have seven match winning streaks themselves, while Goodman and Eric Irwin are on five match runs. After losing their first three matches, to Navy, Army and Rutgers, Lehigh's netters have come back with a-vengence. The closest win came in a 5-1 match over a powerful St. Louis team at Hilton Head. The Engineers put their streak on the line on Thursday when they travel to Villanova. The Patriot League schedule resumes with a trip to Colgate on April 1.
