LEHIGHLIGHTS MARIANI MOVING ON —Fred Mariani. who has served as Lehigh olTensive lino coach for five years, has accepted a position as offensive coordinator at Fordham University! The new position represents an opportunity for professional advancement and allows Mariani to live closer id his family in Northern New Jersey. MISSISSIPPI STARS - All-American wide receiver Dave Cecchini and All-East punier Craig Melograno have been selected lo play in a collegiate All-Star game on February 6 in Jackson. Mississippi. The game matches all-stars from Division I-AA against all-stars from Division I-A. WRESTLING DINNER — The 11th Annual Lehigh Wrestling Club Dinner will be held this Saturday following the Engineers' match with Rider. This year's event honors Lehigh University. President Dr. Peter Likins. who was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame as an "Outstanding American" on May 15. 1993. Fellow Hall-of-Famcr Mike Caruso will serve as master of ceremonies. The festivities will take place in the University Center with an open bar reception in Room 308 at 4:15 p.m. and dinner in ihc Asa Packer Dining Room al 5:00 p.m. Cosi for Ihc dinner is $18'per person and those interested should mail a check (made payable to Lehigh University) to : Lee Barthold '50 439 High Street Bethlehem. When the season began members of the Lehigh basketball team vowed to play better defense and work harder with all-out hustle in every game. Through the early portion of an absolutely murderous schedule which included Iowa. Tulane. Houston and Penn. it was difficult to gauge just how much the team had improved from one year ago. Now. two games into the Patriot' League season it is very obvious that the team knew what it was talking about. Basketball is fun again at Lehigh and although fans at Stabler Arena haven't had much opportunity to see the "New" Engineers, thanks to a stretch which sees Lehigh in road uniforms in seven of eight games.the hometown fans will finally get theiropportunity this Saturday night when Lehigh hosts Army at 7:30 p.m. But before we look too far ahead to that contest let's enjoy what has happened in the last week. January 8th at Stabler. Lehigh is missing three players against Yale, but sophomore Kem Widmer and junior Jason Fichter score 19 points and senior Mike McKee ties an arena record with 12 assists. The result: Lehigh wins 76-73. "We were hungry." McKee said. "We've got to get even hungrier too. We've been searching for wins. We needed something like this to get us started." January 10th at Columbia. Lehigh found itself down 37-27. but rallied in the second half to defeat the Lions 78-67 in overtime behind 21 points from Rashawne Glenn and a career-high 12 points from McKee. and Navy look us out of everything." Duke said. "We remembered that. This year we're stronger and more mature." Finally the Hart Center in Worcester. Massachusetts. Fichter lips in a Glenn miss with four seconds left to give Lehigh a stirring 87-85 win. Junior Ivan Wilkins is the story in this game as he scores a career-high 19 points to go along with nine rebounds. Campbell contributes with 17 points including five three pointers, while Glenn and Fichter each have 17 points. McKee. who is playing the best point guard for Lehigh since Scott Layer, contributes with 10assists and only one turnover. "The league has started, and it's time for us lo gel busy." Wilkins said. "Coach said we had lo step it up and I'm one of those guys who had to step il up." So here lhey are. the Lehigh Engineers at 2-0 in the Patriot League and winners of four straight.
