Volume 36, Number 25 Meri Wall LEHIGHLIGHTS 'WALL' OF FAME -It's getting to be pretty routine for Lehigh lefthander Meri Wall. The senior from Whitehall captured her second straight Patriot League Pitcher of the Week award last Monday after she recorded wins over both Colgate and Fordham. She gave up just one earned run in each game and in her other start that week, she pitched a complete game two-hitter in a 1-0 loss at Villanova. As of press time, Wall was in strong contention for a third straight nomination. Last week, she struck out eight in a 12-2 win at Lafayette and came back with a 2-0 shutout of LaSalle in which she recorded a season-high nine strikeouts. Her efforts helped the Engineers clinch their second straight Patriot League regular season title (see page 3). MARATHON MAN - Former Lehigh track & field member Joe McVeigh cnmppted in last week's Boston Marathon and came up with a very impressive finish. The Ex-Engineer finished 39th overall in a time of 2 horn's and 19 minutes. Another Patriot League title Women's lacrosse downs Lafayette in thrilling championship battle By ROB SCHMIDT Sports Information Assistant In a game that saw almost as many lead changes as goals, the Lehigh University women's lacrosse team walked away a 14- 13 winner, and put an end to Lafayette College's dynasty in Patriot League play. . The Leopards came into the game undefeated in league play since the addition of sports other than football took place in 1990- 91, but that didn't seem to phase the determined Engineers. "I though we had a shot to win from the outset," said Lehigh head coach Jackie Keeley. . "We felt that we were even with them last year but but we didn't win so the returning players wanted this one really bad." Liz Brode's goal with 33 seconds left in the game was the difference in the game. For Brode, it was her fourth of the game, which came from a tough angle to the left of Leopard goalkeeper Heather Bohahan and was set up by Kristin Gillis on a free position shot attempt. "It was an eight meter shot from the center hash and Jill (Altshuler) has the power from there so I knew that it was optimal to pass to Lizzy," said Gillis, who had a game high five goals and one assist. ("It was a quick stick shot and I knew Lizzy could do it. Plus it was her birthday so I went for it." Brode took her birthday present and faked high before putting it through Bohanan's legs, and putting Lehigh in the Patriot League history books. Liz Brode scored the game-winning goal for Lehigh with 33 seconds left. I Joe Ryan Lafayette's Alison Sipe got the ball rolling with a goal early in the first half, and the offensive explosion by both teams never ended. All totaled, the Leopards had 40 shots, leading to 21 saves for Lehigh goaltender Mary-Alice Zavocki. "I did anticipate a high scoring- contest, but I was hoping that we could have put them away earlier," said Keeley after she was handed the Patriot League trophy from Zavocki. "We tried to emphasize league games throughout the season and took things one step at a time. We also tried to generate a championship atmosphere in the lockerroom this week during practice and it all seemed to work for us." Jill Altshuler, who was forced to miss the first five games of the season due to a knee injury added added three goals and four assists to the Engineers' charge. Cristina Brill rounded out the Lehigh scoring with two goals. LADY LAX NOTES: Engineers split their remaining two contests last week, downing Drexel by an 11-6 score before falling to Hofstra, 10-8... Against the Dragons, Altshuler comtinued to light the lamp with four goals while Gillis and Brode each scored three times...Jennifer George had the other Engineer goal and also added a pair of assists...In the loss to Hofstra, Lehigh held an 8-6 lead midway through the second half before the Flying Dutchwomen reeled off the last four goals of the game...Altshuler was the top gun once again with three goals and an assist...George, playing in her final home game, and Brill each added a pair of tallies while Gillis had the other Engineer score...Mary Alice Zavocki came up with 15 saves in goal in the losing effort...Engineers lost despite outshooting Hofstra by a 32-21 margin...Brode continues to lead the squad in both goals (42) and assists (17) for a 59-point total...Altshuler now has 33 goals on the season while Gillis has scored 29 times...Lehigh, which is now 9-5 overall, finishes the season on the road with a 3:30 game today at Delaw are and a 4:00 contest on Thursday at West Chester...A win in either two of those games would signify Lehigh's first 10- win season since 1988 when the squad went 12-7...The Engineers have already assured themselves of their winningest season since that 1988 campaign. Liz Brode, Jen George and coach Jackie Keeley hold the chamionship trophy. -Pnotoby Joe Ryan
