'K^i^^im^^W:^. Volume 35, Number 18 February 16, 1993 Bethlehem, Pa. LEHIGHLIGHTS A ROOKIE SWEEP -Freshman guard Rashawne Glenn of the men's basketball team and freshman forward Bridget Deakin of the women's basketball team were each named Patriot League Rookie of the Week for the week ending 2/7. Glenn, a native of Trenton, N.J., set career highs in points (16) and assists (5) in Lehigh's loss to Navy (2/6). He has since reset that career high in scoring with 18 points against Towson State (2/8). Deakin had a 12-point, 13- rebound outing at Lafayette (2/3) and followed it up by scoring a career-high 18 points against Navy (2/6). The Danbury, Conn, native then shattered her career high with 18 rebounds against Holy Cross (2/ 11), one short of a Lehigh record, and hauled in 12 boards at Fordham (2/13). It marked the second time this season that Lehigh has swept the Rookie of the Week awards. Maurice Hallett and Jessica Mudry were the recipients 12/12. SWIMMING STRONG— The Patriot League swimming championships get underway on Thursday at Colgate University in Hamilton, N.Y. Something that a lot of college students worry about in their first few days of walking down new halls and gazing at entirely new buildings. The problem was, he wasn't exactly sure how he would handle being away from his friends and family for the first time in his life. "The toughest thing was separating myself from my boyhood friends, and I was even the best man at a wedding last summer," Glenn said. "I've also had a great relationship with my mom and she's always been there for me." Well rest assured Deon Hames, Todd Thomson, Thomas Brown and Mrs. Betty Glenn. He's fit in rather nicely here, thank you. Glenn, Lehigh's starting freshman point guard, has made the most of life as an Engineer so far. And he makes sure to stay in touch with the people important to him. "Deon is the starting freshman point guard at Rider now and he's having a heck of a year. He was my backcourt partner in high school," Glenn said. "We talk to each other before every game and offer each other words of encouragement." Glenn is currently in the process of matching his good friend's success. Overthe last several games, he has shown a brilliant knack for scoring while asserting himself in the starter's role. "I feel very comfortable being a starter because it's natural for me," Glenn said. "I've been starting all my life and I appreciate the opportunity that I'm getting here at Lehigh." But his initial season hasn't been what you would call picture-perfect. The Engineers have struggled to get into the win column, and Glenn and his teammates have taken their share of lumps. "I'm not going to lie and say I've enjoyed the losing because I've never liked to lose," Glenn said. "The good thing is we've all had a chance to play a lot of minutes and contribute. As a young team, that can only help us next year." Glenn's account of the current state of affairs is an accurate one. Lehigh has five freshmen and two sophomores on this year's squad, and Glenn and his classmates are being forced to learn the ropes right away. "The whole thing is really a challenge," Glenn said. Between classes, practice, film sessions and studying, it can be a tough situation. The whole atmosphere is great in that it's helping all of us to mature." That maturity came to full fruition for Glenn this past week when he was named Patriot League Rookie of the Week after a career-high 16 points against Navy. All he did for an encore was reset his career high with 18 points against Towson State. "I was happy to receive the award because it's a nice honor but people won't remember that at the end of the season," Glenn said. "What people remember is your final record and my ultimate goal is to help the program get some wins." Glenn probably never dreamed he'd be experiencing this type of success when he first started playing basketball. As a matter of Rashawne Glenn is now Lehigh's third-leading scorer. -Photo by Joe Ryan fact, he broke onto the scene in a pretty reserved fashion. "My dad put up a small outdoor hoop in our backyard one day, mainly just so I could shoot around and have something to do," Glenn said. "After a while it became my first love and it .was a natural thing for me." Yeah it became natural, alright. Glenn went on to score 1,911 points in his high school career at The Hun School while being named to the All-State team during his senior season. But that senior year holds an even more precious memory for Glenn. "We beat St. Benedict's Prep (of Newark, N.J.) in the state championship game and I scored 30 points," Glenn said. "That's something I'll remember for a long time." With that kind of a high school background, Glenn was heavily recruited by schools like Holy Cross, Drexel and Pennsylvania. In the end, though, all signs pointed to Bethlehem for him. "I saw the opportunity to come in and play right away and grow with the program," Glenn said. "I also knew the academics here were very demanding and that would force me to work hard towards a good education." And while most of his time is taken up with trying to balance the heavy load that goes along with being a student-athlete, Glenn has an occasional spare moment to get away from it all. "Usually, I'll just take in a college basketball game on the television when I have free time," Glenn said. "But I'll often go over to the gym and shoot around, even during the season. I really find it hard to pull myself away from the sport." As the season winds down, Glenn can take heart in the fact that he's gaining valuable experience for the years to come. That doesn't mean, however, that he's written off the 1992-93 season just yet. "I'm not looking past this year and I'd like to win some more games, especially at home," Glenn said. "Making the All-Rookie team would be my individual goal, but basically I'd just like for us to finish strong so we have confidence to build upon next season." And with three more years to work his magic on South Mountai n, you get the feel ing that Rashawne Glenn will be making the most of his new home. HOOP SCOOP: Engineers dropped three games last week, losing to Towson State (79- 70) and Holy Cross (104-87) at home and to Fordham (93-74) on the road...Chuck Penn moved into fifth place on the all-time scoring list with 1,335 points surpassing Charlie Brown and Bill Griffin. Penn trails only Daren Queenan (2,703), Mike Polaha (1,969), Bob Krizansky (1,841) and Dozie Mbonu (l,791)...For the first time this year four freshman started along with Penn. Glenn, Maurice Hallett, Kirk Hodgson and Kem Widmer all started vs. Fordham... Widmer pulled down a career-high 15 rebounds vs. Holy Cross and Hallett scored a career-high 19 points vs. the Crusaders...In the Holy Cross game Lehigh set Stabler Center records for FGA (80) and the 104 points scored by Holy Cross was the most ever given up at Stabler by Lehigh...Jason Fichter was not in the starting lineup for the first time this season vs. Fordham. He responded by scoring a career-high 25 points off the bench...This marks the first time in four seasons that Lehigh will not finish in the top four of the league standings dating back to the East Coast Conference. The last time Lehigh failed to do so was when it finished seventh in the E.C.C. during the 1988-89 season...Lehigh hosts Army Wednesday night and plays three of its final four games at home before finishing regular season at Colgate. This Saturday's Bucknell game will be televised in the Lehigh Valley on WFMZ- TV and at halftime one person, chosen at random will be given the opportunity to win one million dollars by making a layup, foul shot, three point shot and 3/4 court shot.
