Delaware. In the process, the Engineers got "run over" by a Delaware ground attack which caused more fireworks than a 4th of July celebration. The Blue Hens, using the Wing-T offense to perfection, racked up a gaudy 473 rushing yards en route to a 62-21 pasting of the Engineers in the season opener for both teams. "I'm glad it's the only time we'll see the Wing-T," said Lehigh defenseive end Bret Almassy (Social Relations). "They executed it extremely well." Delaware gave a sign of things to come just 1:23 into the game when senior halfback Lanue Johnson ran a misdirection play for a 75-yard touchdown on the third play from scrimmage. The score put the Blue Hens on top, 7-0, and the home team was just getting started. Sophomore halfback Pat Williams scored the first of his four touchdowns on the afternoon two drives later to give the Blue Hens a 14-0 lead after one quarter. Junior fullback Daryl Brown got into the act on Delaware's next scoring drive, breaking loose for a 54-yard run down to the Engineer 15-yard line. Johnson capped the drive with a 13-yard scamper for a 21-0 Blue Hen lead. "I have confidence in our offensive line but Lehigh's defense appeared to be confused," said Delaware coach Tubby Raymond. "Our offense is so complex." The Engineers got their first touchdown of the season on the next drive, when senior quarterback Scott Semptimphelter(Management) hit senior tailback Mark Lookenbill (Management) with a nine-yard touchdown pass. But any hopes of a Lehigh comeback were thwarted when the Blue Hens scored three touchdowns in the next 55 seconds. Williams scored on a 65-yard run and then added a 33-yard touchdown reception down the middle from senior quarterback Dale Fry. with the latter score coming after Semptimphelter was intercepted. Johnson then scored his third touchdown of the day after another Semptimphelter interception and Delaware had a 42-7 lead. The Engineers did strike again before halftime when Semptimphelter hit senior wide receiver Dave Cecchini (Business) with a nine-yard scoring strike to cut it to 42-14 at the half. Kevin Rubin set new career highs with 13 catches for 168 yards. Brown (127 yards) and Johnson (106 yards) each went over 100 yards rushing for the day. Fry threw just six passes but completed five of them for 136 yards and two touchdowns. Semptimphelter had a busy day. completing 30 of 50 passes for 313 yards and three touchdowns but he was intercepted four times and sacked on six other occasions. Rubin caught 13 passes for 168 yards and a touchdown en route to Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week honors. "We weren't out there playing Lehigh football You could tell in the locker room (after the game) the guys know we have a loi lo prove," Almassy said. "It didn't happen today." Delaware closed out "the scoring when Kenny Bailey picked off a pass from Lehigh backup QB Bob Aylsworth (Business) and returned it 94 yards for a touchdown in the game's final minute.
