He ihcn set the school record in the 220 with a lime of :22.96 al llie second Mid-Atlantic TAC Meel January 11. INSIDE the Mountaineer Heavy, heavy fuel 3 Swim teams aiming for Patriot League Championships 3 Winter sports results 4 Lafayette no match for Lehigh Engineers move into Patriot League first place tie By MARC GESUALDO '92 South Mountaineer Writer Basketball fans on South Mountain probably feel like they've been watching a season-long episode of "To Tell The Truth." So — will the real Lehigh Engineers please step forward? If Saturday night's 78-64 victory over visiting Lafayette was any indication, the Engineers have replaced the impostors from early in the season and are back on track for the coveted Patriot League championship. Coupled with last Wednesday's 106- 86 shellacking of Navy in Annapolis, the win pushed the Engineers to 9-9 overall and 4-1 in the Patriot League, tied for first with Holy Cross and Colgate. "We went into tonight very relaxed, mainly because it was at home," said Lehigh forward Bob Krizansky. "We always play well here." Lehigh remained undefeated (6-0) at Stabler Arena by opening the second half with a 17-7 run to extend a seven- point halftime lead to 52-35. Junior guard Chuck Penn capped the spurt with a layup for two of his 10 points. The Engineers were led by preseason Patriot League Player of the Year Krizansky, who collected 15 points, five assists and five steals. Senior forward Dozie Mbonu contributed to a balanced Engineer attack with 13 points. "I'm pleased with our team effort tonight," Duke said. "I don't want Bobby and Dozie to have to score 21 ...22 points every night." The Engineers had been much maligned for their defense recently, as they entered the Lafayette contest giving up an average of 81 points per game. Yet Lehigh held Lafayette to 43 percent LU Men's Basketball shooting and forced 17 Leopard turnovers which it manufactured into 22 points. "When we start our offense off our defense, that's Lehigh basketball," Krizansky said. That combination proved effective at Navy also as the Engineers withstood a 58-point first-half performance which saw the Midshipmen nail an unbelievable ten of 18 three- pointers. Lehigh trailed by two points at the half but outscored Navy, 50-28 in arguably its best second half of the season. Mbonu paced the Engineers with 28 points in that game while Krizansky poured in 20 as Lehigh shot 54 percent from the field. Senior forward Greg Berliner came off the bench to chip in with a career-high 13 points, while connecting on three of four three-point attempts. "We played well in the second half at Navy and this (the Lafayette game) was a carryover," said Krizansky. "It's no secret. We are a second half team." The Engineers have now beaten their rivals from Easton in five straight contests, the first time that's happened since Lehigh posted six straight wins from 1924-27. The team has little time to celebrate, though, as it has two important Patriot League showdowns upcoming. Tomonow, the Engineers travel to Lewisburg, Pa. to take on Bucknell (3-2 in the league) at an always ear-shattering Davis Gym. Then it's back to Stabler next Saturday at 3 p.m. for a potential first-place shootout with the Holy Cross Crusaders, the team that knocked Lehigh out of the Patriot League tournament a year ago. The younger Engineers performed admirably, taking the crowd out of the match early, before turning over the reins to the veterans to drive Lehigh home to victory. Tied at 14-14 entering the final two bouts, seniors Solomon (Beau) Fleckman and John Morris scored deciding decisions, Morris's by a major, to earn Lehigh (3-7,2-2) a key EIWA victory on the road. "The young guys wrestled great tonight, "said Lehigh head coach Tom Hutchinson, "and the older ones were solid as usual." In winning six of the last nine bouts, including Steve Cassidy's draw at 150, the Engineers essentially made up for a loss at Syracuse the night before, 22-19, to the defending EIWA champions.
