A look at how many athletes come from each area: STATE # OF ATHLETES Lehigh runs into one tough Wildcat Bourassa's 174 yards, two touchdowns spell 28-14 New Hampshire win By GLENN HOFMANN Sports Information Director Lehigh's inability to make the big plays at crucial times was the major story as a very high-powered New Hampshire squad came into Goodman Stadium and beat the Engineers, 28-14. Wildcat running back Barry Bourassa rushed for 174 yards and two touchdowns, and the game's initial drives by both teams went a long way in determining the outcome of this contest. New Hampshire, which was picked as high as No. 11 in many national preseason polls, drove into Lehigh territory and gambled on a fourth and 12 situation at the Lehigh 32- yard line. The decision to go for the first down payed off, as quarterback Rich Green hit Mike Gallagher for a 14-yard first down pass. UNH scored three plays later on Bourassa's t w o - y a r d plunge. Lehigh came right back, marching down the field to a first-and- goal situation from the eight- yard line. Three plays later, Lehigh was still three yards from a score but when Dave Begelman had his ensuing field goal attempt blocked, the Engineers still found themselves trailing, 7-0. The first two drives were a sign of things to come as UNH scored again midway through the second quarter on a 31 -yard TD pass from Green to David Gamble. The Wildcats then tallied twice in the third to build a seemingly insurmountable 28-0 lead entering the final period of play. Bourassa took off on a 45-yard touchdown scamper and Green added a score on a quarterback sneak. That's when the Lehigh offense finally got on a roll. Senior tailback Mark Lookenbill capped a seven-play drive with a 13-yard scoring run. Then quarterback Scott Semptimphelter hit Jason Cristino for a seven-yard score and suddenly Lehigh was within 14 points with 4:44 remaining. UNH drove down the field, but when faced with a fourth and one at the LU 11, the decision to go for a first down failed this time. The Engineers took over and immediately went to work. Semptimphelter drove Lehigh back down the field, but when his 20-yard pass into the end zone slipped out of the hands of Cristino (8 receptions, 141 yards), so too did any thoughts Lehigh had of winning the game. "The first half was one of the worst first halves of offensive football I've seen," Lehigh head coach Hank Small said after the game. "If we had a first half passing game like we did in the second half the outcome would have been a little different." After the Lehigh offense gained only 113 yards of total offense in the first half, Semptimphelter alone was an impressive 14- passes for 33 yards. Lookenbill racked up over 100 all-purpose yards for the second straight game. And while the offense continued to struggle, the defensive again lacked consistency. "I thought our defense overall played pretty well," Small said. "We still have to put together a solid four quarters, though. At times the "D" looked great and at other times, especially in the third quarter, we didn't look good at all." Lehigh is still looking for that complete outing where everything clicks. In all areas of the game there are signs that the Engineers are on the verge of putting everything together. For New Hampshire, after an 0-2 start, game three is when that complete effort occured. Lehigh hopes the same happens in its third game at Cornell this Saturday. EXTRA POINTS: Lehigh quarterbacks have now thrown for at least 198 yards in 24 straight games... Offensive lineman Randy Williams had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee and will miss the next four weeks...Sam Lawler, who began the year as the backup tight end is now the Engineers' starting left defensive end... For the game the junior signal caller was 28-of- 47 for 323 yards. "I think you saw the real Scott Semptimphelter in the second half," Small said. "Our receivers have really played well and are getting open. It's just a matter of getting them the ball and giving ourselves the time to do so." Indeed the pass protection was again a problem as Semptimphelter was sacked seven times. He also threw two interceptions, one of them coming at the Wildcats' two-yard line with Lehigh trailing, 7-0. "Even though we were down 28-0 we kept our heads up and felt confident we could come back," said Lookenbill, who carried 23 times for 118 yards and also caught seven — Photo by Joe Ryan UNH 7 7 14 0 —28 LEHIGH 0 0 0 14 —14 UNH — Bourassa 2 run (Hjelte kick) UNH — Gamble 31 pass from Green (Hjelt kick UNH — Bourassa 45 run (Hjelte kick) UNH — Green 1 run (Hjelte kick) LEH — Lookenbill 13 run (Begelman kick) LEH — Cristino 7 pass from Sempt (Beg. kick) TEAM STATS LEHIGH UNH First Downs 18 26 Rushes-Yards 34-67 44-299 Yds.
