Grace Hall entertained over 3,500 fans who welcomed the Engineers back to "The Snakepit" for the first time this season as they were treated to a victory over EIWA foe Wilkes, 25-12, on Saturday and a loss to mighty 3rd-ranked Penn State, 33-6, on Sunday. The Wilkes victory completed a four-match win streak which began the weekend before with the Engineers' three-team sweep in a Quad meet at Stabler Arena, highlighted by a 23-19 upset over #25 Pittsburgh in the day's final act. After the split this weekend, the Engineers' 7-9 mark is their most dual triumphs in one season since the 1985- 86 campaign. In Saturday's win over Wilkes, the Engineers won six of the final seven bouts to pull away from a pesky Colonel squad who began the afternoon with a 9- 3 lead. Steady Solomon Fleckman won his eight straight dual match this season. Wrestling at 167 for the first time since early January. Fleckman gave the Engineers their first lead of the day at 13- 12 after his major decision over fellow- Floridian Ray Monzon. Following Fleckman, sophomore Andy Fitz won a key bout at 177 over a more experienced Aaron Tufankjian, 10-9, to ignite Lehigh. Also, sophomore Tom Koch furthered his four-bout win streak and sophomore Chris O'Byrne avenged a loss last season to Mike Evans, with his * it M|* ^ Mm {-■'■ $4% *m ^ 0* Over 2,400 fans jam Grace Hall to see Lehigh take on Penn State. -Photo by joe ryan Lehigh 25, Wilkes 12 118 - Chris Rickard (W) fall Biel (L) 3:47 126 - Koch (L) dec. Krizansky said head coach Tom Hutchinson. "I was proud of Fitz and Silimperi down the stretch." So the Engineers headed into the Penn State encounter with a four-match win streak. Unfortunately, the third-ranked Nittany Lions were winners in 16 of 19 this season including recent victories over #2 Iowa State and #6 Michigan. In addition, Penn State sported SEVEN nationally ranked wrestlers in the Amateur Wrestling News' Top 10. Sunday was as much an event as it was a match with WLVT (Channel 39) in Bethlehem televising the match state-wide "live" in Grace for the first-time ever. Despite the large margin of victory, the Engineers still appeared ready for prime-time as they lost two of the bouts by a deuce while picking up a couple of solid victories against one of the nation's best teams. Steve Cassidy won his 150-pound bout and heavyweight John Morris was victorious over a local favorite in Greg Troxell. Captain Solomon Fleckman, ranked 9th in the nation, was forced to forfeit after three and a half minutes due to flu symptoms despite leading the bout 3-1 over 3rd-ranked Dave Hart. NOTES: The Engineers will take this weekend off to make room for the National Prep wrestling tournament held on Friday and Saturday...They will return to action for their final dual meet of the season against Bloomsburg at Grace Hall on Saturday, February 29 at 7:30...Three wrestlers have gone over the 20-win plateau this season: Solomon Fleckman (24-5-1), John Morris (20-6) and Steve Cassidy (22-5- 3)...Also, senior's Fleckman and Morris are moving up Lehigh's all-time victory ladder...Fleckman's overall career total is 74- 26-4, good for the 12th spot and Morris has a mark of 66-30-1 good for 14th place.
