LEHIGHLIGHTS STECKEL LEAVES LEHIGH — Linebacker coach Dave Steckel recently resigned from Lehigh head football coach Hank Small's staff to accept ihc position of defensive line coach at the University of Toledo (OH). Steckel (Kutztown '82). a Whitehall native, was a Lehigh coach for the past four years and also was responsible for the team's sirengih and conditioning. Under Slcckcl. Lehigh developed such defensive stars as linebacker Lee Picariello, the Patriot League's I99l preseason defensive Player of the Year and finished the 1991 season second in the Patriot League in points allowed. ""We're sorry to lose Dave because hqidid a fine job and was so well respected by other members of the staff and by our players." Small said. FORMER LU GREATS HONORED — Following Saturday's Quad Mecl at Stabler Arena, the Lehigh Wrestling Club held a banquet al the Mounlainlop lo honor 16 past Lehigh wrestlers back forihe weekend. Former Lehigh wrestlers in attendance included Michael Brown "80. Tom Sloand '81. Frank Vresics and Tom Bold "82, DarvUBurly. &i'Cii!dHiin^.s'and\k'l¥!1i?irrirt^ '83. Rich Saniora. MEST South Mountaineer Editor Lehigh swimming coach Chris Marshall expects junior Matt Goodrich to be one of his top swimmers. What he doesn't expect is for Goodrich to win three of the most difficult events in any meet. Goodrich did just that last Wednesday, winning the 1000 freestyle, the 200 butterfly and the 500 freestyle and helping Lehigh upset Delaware 145-96. "Matt's performance was absolutely unbelievable." Marshall said. "I wrote his times down on a piece of paper and stuck it to my wall so I can just look at it and say 'Wow.'" Goodrich won the 1000 free in 9:54.14. a full eleven seconds ahead of the next finisher, Delaware's Andy Palmer, who touched the wall at 10:15.17. Goodrich then narrowly won the 200 fly in 1:59.59. edging out Delaware's Ross Blanchard. who finished in 1:59.67. He then topped off his day with a r, winning;time oNfcMSfcSO in the500 free, three seconds- ahead-®f4eaniniat»;Aa*o»-.Biirda. Marshall said he expected a close meet, as Delaware had earlier defeated Bucknell. Bucknell had downed Lehigh 138-105 the previous weekend. But Lehigh seized control in the middle events of the meet, capturing first place finishes in eight straight events. Otherfirst place winners for Lehigh included Hunter Simpson (50 free. :21.90). Burda (200 I.M. 2:00.1 1). Dean Manning, (one- meter dive. 240.75). Shane Guenes (100 free. :48.84). Eric Fauerbach (200 back. 1:55.27). and Kevin Murphy (three-meter dive. 222.60). The Lehigh women did not fare so well, falling to Delaware 149-94. Angela Palma continued her hot streak, as she won both the one and three-meter dives for the second straight dual meet. Megan Eves won the 200 IM in 2:15.14. Saturday, both teams traveled to Army and were defeated by the Black Knights, the women by a narrow 127-116 margin and the men by 156-83. With Lehigh ahead in the meet, the Army women rallied to win three of the final four events and grab the win. Lehigh had six first place finishes, five of them individual. Theresa Doyle won the 1000 yard freestyle in 1 1:04.31. Jill Roddin the 200 yard butterfly in 2:15.92 and Marjorie Humm the 100 yard freestyle in 55.80. Angela Palma won the one and three meter dives for the third consecutive meet, scoring 224.325 in the one meter and 236.925 in the three meter. Lehigh's 400 yard freestyle relay team of Humm, Jennifer King, Jen Canavan and Daryl Smith won in 3:49.56. Eric Fauerbach won the 200 yard backstoke in 1:55.43 and the team of Rob Chesley, Andres Sedano. Alec Thomson and Stu Wesse! won the 400 yard freestyle relay in 3:24.87 for the men. The men fell to 3-5 overall and 1 -4 in the Patriot League; the women fell to 2-6 overall and 1-4 in the leamie.
