Somebody should tell that to the Lehigh men's basketball team. As the Engineers tried to win their third straight Patriot League game, it was senior Paul Olkowski's layup with three seconds remaining that gave Bucknell University a 95-94 victory in a thriller at Stabler Arena Saturday night. "This one definitely hurts,", said Lehigh senior co-captain Bob Krizansky. "Luckily we have the tournament here, and we can put three more wins together here and show the fans that we're not going to let them down." The loss was Lehigh's first at home this year, and it marked the sixth time in as many tries that the Engineers failed to put together three consecutive wins. "it was one of the greatest college basketball games I've ever been associated with," said Bucknell head coach Charlie Wool 1 urn. "It's just too bad that somebody had to lose." With Bucknell leading 91-90. junior guard Chuck Penn hit a running jumper with 1:00 remaining to give the Engineers the one-point lead. But the Bison answered as senior guard Bill Courtney drove the lane to draw Krizansky\s fifth foul. Courtney gave Bucknell a 93-92 lead with :32 left as he calmly sank both free throws in front of a screaming crowd of 4.322, the fifth largest in Stabler Arena history. Lehigh brought the ball up court, and Penn brought the crowd to its feet as he connected on a 15-foot fall-away baseline jumper with 16 seconds on the clock. Bucknell called timeout to set up the eventual game-winning basket. Courtney penetrated the lane and drew three Lehigh defenders before dishing the ball to a wide-open Olkowski underneath the basket. Lehich called REMEMBERING A FABULOUS FOUR YEARS Prior to last Saturday's doubleheader with Bucknell, Lehigh honored its eight graduating seniors from the men's and women's basketball teams. "We were supposed to run a box play. but.as all great coaching moves go. it broke down." Woollum said. "It didn't go. but Bill came up with the greatest assist of his career." After being held scoreless by the relentless defense of Penn in the first half. Courtney exploded for 19 second half points. The final home game for Lehigh before the Patriot League tournament, it was "Senior Night" at Stabler, and rightfully so. "The seniors came up big for us." Lehigh head coach Dave Duke said. "I thought they played extremely well." Seniors Jay Hipps. Dozie Mbonu and Krizansky each scored 22 points to lead the Engineers. Mbonu. Lehigh's fourth all-time leading scorer, was seven for nine from the floor and eight of eight from the free throw line. Krizansky put on another superb outing, scoing 22 points, grabbing 12 rebounds and dishing out six assists before fouling out. Eor further information, contact the ticket office at 7LU-GAME.- points in the first half, but a 8-0 Lehigh run, sparked by three-pointers from senior Steve Yaniga (I I points) and Krizansky evened the score at 51 at the half. The Engineers stormed out to a nine- point lead five minutes into the second half, and showed signs of possibly putting the game out of reach. But Bucknell retaliated, and regained the lead, 78-76, on a Courtney 12-foot jumper with 7:48 remaining. Falling behind by four, Lehigh fought back on four consecutive field goals by Hipps. "I didn't realize I had eight in a row," Hipps said. "I was just in the flow." But it was the heroics of Courtney and, maybe more importantly, the foul trouble of Krizansky, that were too much to overcome. Courtney scored 12 points in the last seven minutes, including Bucknell's last eight before assisting Olkowski's game-winner. Krizanksy picked up his fourth foul with 10:18 left and Lehigh leading by four points. Three minutes later, he came back to a two- point deficit. He would eventually foul out with :32 remaining, but his game was obviously limited by the foul trouble. "I didn't want to leave Stabler like that, fouling out." Krizansky said. "The worst feeling a player can have is to be sitting there after fouling out." "If we had to lose one here, this is the one we wanted it to be," Duke said. "Now we've got another chance in the tournament." Before the tournament begins, Lehigh has a chance to gain some momentum. The Engineers travel to Lafayette tomorrow and Holy Cross Saturday to complete the regular season. All it takes is three wins in March, and somebody's going to the NCAA tournament as the Patriot League champion. "I'd love to play them again," Krizansky said. "They beat us twice, so we owe them." If it came down to it, who knows what a third time would bring?
