LEHIGHLIGHTS AMY'S AN ALL-STAR— Senior back Amy Earley of the Lehigh field hockey team has been selected to participate in the 1992 CFHCA Division I North-South Senior All-Star Game. The game will take place Sat., Nov. 21 at Virginia Commonwealth University and features top players from schools such as Brown, Rutgers. Duke, Rider and Connecticut. Earley, who scored a career-high eight goals this season, is the first Engineer to receive the honor in the history of the Lehigh field hockey program. SEMPTI HITS THE TRIFECTA— A 241-yard, three-touchdown performance against Bucknell has earned junior quarterback Scott Semptimphelter his third Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week award for the 1992 season. The Florence, NJ native completed 13 of 20 passes in leading the Engineers to a 38-16 victory. He also received the honor after leading Lehigh to a 31 -24 win over Brown (10/17) and shared the honor following a 42-28 loss to Northeastern (10/10). In addition, "Sempti" has appeared on the ECAC Honor Roll five times this season. ROCKIN' RAUCH & AMAZIN' GRACE — The Lehigh volleyball team hosts Princeton Tuesday night with a rare opportunity at stake. A look at where Lehigh ranks with other powerhouses: SCHOOL NATIONAL CHAMPS OKLAHOMA STATE 110 OKLAHOMA 59 IOWA STATE 54 IOWA 48 LEHIGH 24 MICHIGAN STATE 23 NORTHERN IOWA 20 MICHIGAN 17 Lehigh runs rampant over Bison Semptimphelter, special teams key 38-16 victory By GLENN HOFMANN Sports Information Director There would be no looking back on critical mistakes or missed opportunities for Lehigh this week as the Engineers dominated Bucknell in a 38-16 victory at Goodman Stadium to even their Patriot League record at 2- 2. "It was just right," said head coach Hank Small. "To get, in our last home game, a victory and 2-2 in the league." "We haven't done nearly as well as we thought we would this season, but we finished up at home on a good note," said senior guard Calvin Hobbs. "The two games we'll remember most this year are the Lehigh-Lafayette game and our last home game." Saturday's game was the result of every area of the team performing well. Offensively, Patriot League Player-of-the-Week Scott Semptimphelter threw for 241 yards and three touchdowns in just a little over three quarters of action. Sophomore tailback Jason Mastropierro carried 24 times for 92 yards and junior Kevin Rubin caught four passes for 99 yards. Just as important was that the offense showed some big-play capability as Semptimphelter hit Rubin on a 58-yard touchdown strike which gave Lehigh a 31-9 lead late in the third quarter. It also showed the ability to score inside the 20-yard line as Lehigh scored all four times inside, the red zone. The most impressive Engineer score was a one-yard pass from Semptimphelter to Sean McCarthy on fourth down with 6:13 left in the second quarter which gave Lehigh a 17-3 lead. "They had a game plan to take Jason Cristino away from us," Semptimphelter said. "But you can't double-team him because that leaves three other guys open." Defensively, the line played maybe its best game of the year. Led by junior Brett Almassy, who recorded a game-high 13 tackles, the Engineer defense held Bucknell to only nine points prior to a late Bison score with only :40 remaining. "Speaking for all the underclassmen, we dedicated this game to the seniors," Almassy said. "Before the game all the defensive lineman got together and said we wanted to prove that we could make the big plays and I think we did that today." The whole defense made plays as junior Kevin Jefferson had 11 tackles and classmate Lance Haynes had six. SEE YA!... Senior Ben Taylor blocked Jason Fralick's punt on Bucknell's initial drive of the third quarter and freshman Tony Perilla ran it in from 22 yards out to give the Engineers a 24-3 lead. "That blocked punt was a major reversal," Bison head coach Lou Maranzana said. "It certainly changed the complexion of the game." Added Perilla, "When I first got it, I thought I was going to trip. It felt good to score." It marked the second big play by the special teams unit. Earlier in the game the Bison bobbled a punt snap and senior Adam Ciperski sacked punter David Todd for a 16-yard loss to the Bison 29. That play resulted in a 20-yard field goal by freshman Byron Dyson. Another positive sign was Lehigh's ability to score in the third quarter. The Engineers' 14 points in the third quarter equalled their total for the entire year. The 38 points was the most the team's scored since last year's 41 points at Bucknell. So after some agonizing losses the last two weeks, the Engineers finally put it all together and showed how effective they can be when mistakes are avoided. EXTRA POINTS: Semptimphelter is now No. 6 in single season completions (200) and No. 7 in yards (2,545)...Senior tailback Mark Lookenbill may apply for an extra year of eligibility.
