With the four champions, Lehigh placed third (97) of 10 teams, with the title going to 20th-ranked Bloomsburg University (101). Fourteenth-ranked Wisconsin took second (100), while ninth-ranked North Carolina State came in fourth (93), behind Lehigh. Lehigh junior Tom Koch captured first at 126 with a fall at 3:57, only his third career fall. Koch's championship victory over George Swann of Bucknell was sweetened with revenge. "I took fifth here last year and I just didn't have a lot of confidence in myself,"' Koch explained. "He (Swann) beat me in a first-round match pretty bad, by a major or something." To advance to the championship finals, Koch, who hails from local Saucon Valley, faced former Nazareth High School wrestler Ryan Nunamaker of North Carolina State. Koch won the match in overtime criteria, 1 -1. One championship bout later, the Engineers gained theirsecond individual champion when junior John McCumber took first at 134, decisioning Clayton Grice of North Carolina State, 7-6. Second-seeded McCumber scored his winning points over top-seeded Grice with a takedown during the final 59 seconds of the match. Lehigh's third champion was junior Steve Cassidy, who successfully defended his crown by decisioning Bloomsburg's Andy Fitzpatrick at 150 by a 7-4 margin. Rick Hepp, Lehigh's sophomore 167-pounder, dominated his bracket by pinning all three opponents he met. In the championship bout, Hepp won by fall in 4:19 over George Mason's Chuck Moorer. At 118, Morgan State's sole champion was Dantae Smith, who decisioned Pete Rinella from Bloomsburg. In the 177 bracket, Bobby Ferraro (Bucknell) decisioned Wisconsin's Mike Griswold 8-1 to take Bucknell's only individual title. Lehigh head coach Tom Hutchinson was pleased with his team's performance, especially following a disappointing 25-18 dual loss to Seton Hall November 30. "You know, when you lose one you shouldn't lose, there are two ways you can respond," Hutchinson said. "You can feel sorry for yourself or you can kick back. The kids kicked back." The Engineers kept kicking back by defeating Wilkes College in a December 9 road dual, 24-9. Lehigh dropped only two matches, the first and last. Only fellow Engineer freshmen David Hardwick at 118 and Ron Edmund at heavyweight were defeated. Hardwick was decisioned by Chris Rickard 9-5. while Edmund was pinned in 29 seconds by Heath Fleisher. Thematches in between were all Lehigh, despite quite a bit of lineup shuffling. Ochoa was the sole winner for Wilkes in a Navy dual, which the Midshipmen won, 33- j. The victory was even more important in that Wilkes is a member of the EIWA. and it will help boost the Engineers' seedings in the EIWA Tournament. "It was good to get the first win. especially with the three-week break coming up," Hutchinson said. "This will give the kids confidence heading into their next tournament."
