4 LEHIGHWEEK SPORTS SUMMER 1992 Summer Edition July 13, 1992 Bethlehem, Pa. LEHIGHLIGHTS FOOTBALL STAFF CHANGES A couple of changes in personnel have been made this summer within the football staff. John Bonamcgo (Maine '90) has joined Hank Small's staff and will serve as a running backs coach. Bonamcgo served as Maine's receivers coach this past season. Assistant linebacker coach Pete Alvanos has left Lehigh lo lake a new position as defensive line coach al Redlands College in Redlands. California. Alvanos will also coordinate the school's strength and conditioning program. LU FOOTBALL TICKETS ON SALE Season and individual tickets for the 1992 football season are now on sale at the Taylor Gym Ticket Office. Lehigh's Goodman Stadium schedule includes the September 12ih season-opener vs. Fordham as well as home games vs. New Hampshire (9/19). Princeton (10/3). Colgate (10/24) and Bucknell (11/7). NFL TRYOUTS Former quarterback Glenn Kempa earned a tryout wilh ihc Chicago Bears while former receiver Horace Hamm was in the Atlanta Falcons camp. Both arc longshots to make each squad, but each has impressed the coaching staffs of each icam. BEST IN THE COUNTRY Last weekend Lehigh hosted the Blue Star Girls Basketball Camp, recognized as the premier girls basketball camp in the country. Nearly 500 campers attended as well as coaches from throughout ihc country including former Lehigh and current Noire Dame head coach MulTcl McGraw. PATRIOT BASKETBALL TOURNEY The Patriot League has announced that next year's men's and women's basketball tournaments will be held at campus sites. In each game the higher seeded team will host the game. This format is similar to the one used by ihe Northeast Confcrencc. LEHIGH FOOTBALL FAST FACT: When the Engineers host Fordham on Sept. 12, they will be gunning for the 500th win in the history of the Lehigh football program. Only eight other Division I-AA schools have reached that landmark number. NFL back in action at Lehigh Jets-Redskins scrimmage set for July 25 By SCOTT GRAMLING South Mountaineer Writer Lehigh University will play host to its fourth National Football League pre-season scrimmage in the last four years this Saturday at Goodman Stadium. Rookies and selected veterans from the New York Jets and Super Bowl Champion Washington Redskins will meet Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The scrimmage will be similar to ones previously held at Goodman Stadium featuring full-contact drills by both teams followed by a regular scrimmage between the two squads. Included amongst the players participating is Browning Nagle. the Jets' top draft choice in 1991 who is projected as the team's starting quarterback this season. Ken O'Brien, who had been the Jets' starting quarterback for most of his nine years with the club, had not yet signed a contract for the upcoming year. "This scrimmage gives us a chance to see some different looks and different moves in a game-like situation," said Jets head coach Bruce Coslet. Forthe Redskins, their fourth-round pick, quarterback Chris Hakel is expected to see action. Hakel starred at William Players from the New York Jets and Washington Redskins take time to sign autographs after last year's NFL scrimmage at Goodman Stadium. -Photo by Dave Scarantino & Mary and completed 24 of 34 passes for 324 yards and two touchdowns in a 41-37 loss to Lehigh at Goodman Stadium last year. Matt Millen. a native of Whitehall, PA. will reurn to the Lehigh Valley, but in a different role. Millen played linebacker for the Redskins last season, and claimed his fourth Super Bowl ring. This year he returns as a broadcaster for WTTG-TV (Channel 5) in Washington. "We're very pleased that the NFL is coming back to Lehigh University and Goodman Stadium." said Lehigh Director of Facilities Greg Schulze. "This scrimmage gives the people of the Lehigh Valley an opportunity to see professional football in a much more relaxed atmosphere." The same two teams played last year, and the Jets played two scrimmages at Goodman Stadium in 1989. one against the Redskins and the other versus the Giants. Tickets are on sale at the Stabler Arena box office or can be purchased by phone by calling (215) 758-GAME. Reserved chairback seat tickets are $10. adult general admission are $6. and youth general admission are $4. Taylor Gym undergoing several major changes Renovations al Taylor Gym have begun and although most of the work deals wilh the infrastructure of the building there arc some very noticeable changes already taking place. Perhaps the biggest change is in the main lobby where you can now view the fitness center from what used to be a trophy case. Stairs have been put in so that ihc fitness center is accessible from this entrance. This is the start of a project which will eventually include a full mezzanine view of the fitness center. The current entrance lo ihc Illness center will be shut down al various points throughout the summer so thai construction crews can install an elevator which will span llic entire building. Once the elevator is installed the temporary stairs from llie lobby will be closed. Offices arc also being constructed throughout the gym for various members of the athletics department. This is expected to affect certain lockcrrooms for much of the remaining summer days. In addition. Jacobs and Morrisscy Pool will be closed al various points llic rcsl of the summer. All construction is expected lo be finished before students return to Lehigh for the fall semester. This planning was lo insure that very little adjustments would be needed by both students and staff once they return. In an effort lo keep all users of Taylor Gym apprised of llic renovations the athletics department is posting the future renovation plans of Taylor Gym as well as a weekly update on construction complete wilh a map of those areas which will be affected in two trophy cases to the left of the ticket and intramural offices entrance. Il is anticipated that most of the major construction on the gym will be taking place next summer. At dial lime a new diving well. fitness center track, basketball and racquelball courls and a Hall of Fame room will be constructed. Wrestling recruits announced Lehigh University head wrestling coach Tom Hutchinson lias announced that seven wrestlers will be attending the university this fall and plan lo compete for Lehigh's wrestling program. Those athletes attending Lehigh will be Brian Bartelle (Edgewood High School/Aico, N.J.), Tim Dougherty (Delsea High School/Franklinvillc N.J.). Ronald Edmund (St. Benedicts Prep/Newark. N.J.), Brian Fisehcnich (Huntington H.S./Hunlinglon. N.Y.). Ryan Hammersmith (Clarence Central H.S./Clarencc, N.Y.). Dave Hardwick (Valley Central H.S./Monlgomery, N.Y.) and Jason Kul/. (Altoona Area High School/ Altoona. Pa.). "It's a good group and at the weights where we need guys. They're going to fill some holes." Hutchinson said. "We've continued to add depth, which has been a problem for us in the past." Bartelle and Edmund arc both expected to battle at the heavyweight position. In addition lo wrestling, Bartelle also-played football in high school while Edmund was the National Prep Tournament heavyweight champion last year. Hammersmith finished second in the New York Slate meel at 177 lbs. Kul/. finished third at 112 lbs. in Pennsylvania and Dougherty fourth in New Jersey at 140 lbs. ' Fisehcnich finished first in New York at 91 lbs. in 1992 and was rated lOlh among llie stale's top 100 wrestlers. Hardwick finished first in New York at the same wcighi a year earlier and is ranked 1 ltli in the stale. i
