Volume 32, Number 10 November 7,1989 Bethlehem, Pa. Photography by YOUNG HONG Colgate humbles Lehigh, 46-30 By RON TICHO Director of Sports Information It was a record-breaking day for Lehigh quarterback Todd Brunner. To be exact, nine school records toppled on Saturday in Hamilton, N.Y., where the Engineers suffered a 46-30 defeat to Colonial League foe Colgate. Brunner set new game standards for pass completions (38), attempts (64), passing yards (467) and total offense (489 yards). He set new seasonal passing records in the following categories; passing yards (3,146), passing touchdowns (24), 300-yard passing games (7), 400-yard passing games (3), and total offense (3,264 yards). But as records go, Brunner would trade them all in for a victory over the Red Raiders. "The records are nice, but I would've swapped them anyday for a win. Individual performances mean very little when your team isn't winning," said a dejected Brunner. Lehigh, 5-4, 1-1 in the Colonial League, struggled for the second week in a row on defense as injuries plagued the Brown and White's secondary. Both starting defensive backs Peter Sczerbinski and Ben Taylor were lost for the remainder of the season with knee injuries during the William & Mary contest. Colgate, 4-5, 1-2 in the Colonial League, took advantage of the secondary situation. Raider QB Dave Goodwin threw for a career-high 445 yards, completing 29 of 43 passes and three touchdown strikes. It was the second best day in Colgate school history, and in the process he broke the school's mark for passing yardage (2,606 yards) and completions (188) in one season. "They're an awfully good team on offense," said Lehigh head coach Hank Small, "As soon as we went with any kind of pressure, they consistently hit the outcuts. Their front gave him (Goodwin) good protection all day. And when we were able to get a little pressure on him, he rolled to one side or the other and hit the open man." The beginning looked much like those of past Engineer games as Lehigh took the opening kickoff 68 yards in 12 plays, scoring the first touchdown of the game on a two-yard pass from Erick Torain to Rob Varano. gee ENG|NEERS page 3 Lehigh quarterback Todd Brunner, scrambles behind the blocking of senior lineman Mike Hendricks. Hendricks and the rest of the "Chain Gang" gave Brunner solid protection while he established four new single game Lehigh records.
