Volume 32, Number 9 October 31,1989 Bethlehem, Pa. Winning streak ends at four William & Mary batters Lehigh 55-39 By MIKE ALBRIGHT South Mountaineer Editor When things go right, teams win big. And when things go bad, well, try to forget about it and look ahead to the next contest. That's what Lehigh coach Hank Small must stress now as his team heads into a season- ending three-game Colonial League bonanza on the heels of a 55-39 loss to William & Mary. On Saturday, William & Mary racked up 594 yards in total offense and beat up on a Lehigh team that had hopes of winning its fifth consecutive game and cracking the nation's Top 20. The Tribe, ranked 20th in Division I-AA, left Goodman Stadium with its sixth victory in six tries against the Engineers. Entering Saturday's contest, Lehigh had the nation's top offense and was second in the nation in scoring. In addition, the Engineers were among a group of teams a few votes short of making the Top 20 Division I-AA poll. Lehigh got its yards—499 to be exact—and its points but failed to get the coveted prize, the university's first "W" against the Tribe. William & Mary used a 28-point outburst in the second quarter to turn a 10-10 ballgame into a 38-17 halftime advantage. Lehigh could get no closer than 14 points the remainder of the game while dropping to 5-3 overall. Arico rushed for four touchdowns, tying a school record. He scored on runs of 11, 13, seven, and two yards. Ayres Boswell, shown below in the Paul Short Run, captured her first East Coast Conference title Saturday at Hofstra. She is the second consecutive Lehigh runner to win the title after Hope Goldhaber's win in 1988. Boswell wins ECC title Second consecutive Engineer to capture crown For the second consecutive year, a Lehigh runner captured the individual title at the East Coast Conference meet, giving coach Patti O'Donnell-Smith a "coaches dream." Lehigh's Ayres Boswell (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) was the only woman to coplete Hofstra University's Sunken Meadow Course in under 19 minutes Saturday. She also followed in the footsteps of teammate Hope Goldhaber (Willow Grove, Pa.) who won the title in 1988. "It's just a coach's dream to have two conference champions in two years," O'Donnell Smith said. Boswell completed the 5K course in 18:58.99, finishing nearly 11 seconds ahead of her closest competitor, Judy Perry of Bucknell University. "Judy Perry gave Ayres a good race but with 600 meters left, Ayres just powered away from her and Perry didn't have anything left," O'Donnell-Smith said. "Ayres ran a relaxed race. She could've run harder if she'd had the competition." Boswell missed part of last season with injuries and her coach commended her for being able to come back. "She's just great to have on the team. She's a leader, not only on the team but with her personality. She's a caring girl," O'Donnell-Smtih said. Lehigh, as a team, finished fourth behind Bucknell, Delaware and Lafayette. Other teams competing were Hofstra and Towson State. O'Donnell-Smith said she was hoping the team would finish third but added that Delaware surprised everyone by finishing second. Not helping Lehigh's cause was a freak accident two weeks ago that slowed freshman Megan Eaves (Palmyra, Pa.). Eaves slipped on a wet stairwell at the hotel during the Colonial Meet and twisted her ankle. She was having a good race Saturday and was sixth at the 1.5 mile mark when she fell and hurt her ankle, i "It was just a shame that that had to happen," O'Donnell-Smith said. Goldhaber had another fine outing, finishing eighth in 19:53.26. Earlier in the year, she missed some time due to a foot injury but she's been rapidly improving since her return. "She could've used about three more weeks to get in top shape," O'Donnell-Smith said. "But she ran a good race. I was pleased. I just don't know how anyone could come back as fast as she did. She really worked in the pool and on the bike to get back in shape." Other Lehigh placewinners were Laurie Parton (Rumson, N.J.) 19th, 20:18.95; Tanya Butensky (Whitehall, Pa.) 21st 20:33.52; and Sandy Grace (Colts Neck, N.J.) 30th, 21:23.98. Also participating were Amy Cook (Fairbanks, Alaska) 34th, 22:17.42; Deidre Dalpiaz (Binghamton, N.Y.) 35th, 22:23.79; and Marilyn Vricella (Totowa, N.J.) 44th. 25:42.59.
