INSIDE the Mountaineer Seniors super for 8-2 LU 2 The 127th Meeting 3 Lehigh-Lafayette on TV's across the U.S.A 3 Women's Basketball preview 4 Men's Basketball preview 5 Football stats & results 2 Lehigh rolls over Bucknell 41-13 as Kempa's four TD's break mark Engineers go 8-2; anticipation for Lafayette grows By STEVE MEST South Mountaineer Editor LEWISBURG, Pa. - Lehigh head coach Hank Small said his team had all three phases of its game — offense, defense and special teams — working Saturday afternoon against Patriot League foe Bucknell. but he was wrong. The Engineers really had fourphases of the game on their side if you add the Bucknell offense, which allowed one touchdown by the Lehigh defense and turned the ball over three times while giving four different quarterbacks — all with basically the same result — a shot at a revival. The anemic Bison offense did nearly as much for Lehigh as the Engineers did for themselves and the predictable outcome was a 41-13 Lehigh win, its eighth of the 1991 season and a good tonic following last week's upset loss at Colgate and heading into next Saturday's season-ending game with archrival Lafayette. Lehigh got four touchdown passes from senior quarterback Glenn Kempa, giving him 30 on the year and breaking Todd Brunner's school record of 26 touchdown passes in a season. Kempa, who was named the Patriot League's Offensive Player of the Week for his efforts, found senior flanker Horace Hamm and junior tailback Mark Lookenbill for scores twice each. Senior linebacker Lee Picariello led the defensive effort with 15 tackles, the ninth time in ten games he had 12 or more tackles, and a sack. Lehigh is 8-2 for the first time since 1983. Quarterback Glenn Kempa added to his list of accomplishments Saturday as his four touchdown passes broke the Lehigh single-season mark and earned him Patriot League Player of the Week honors. Lehigh took a 21-0 lead in the second quarter behind a Larry Arico five-yard run, an 18-yard scoring pass to Hamm and Tommy Clark's 41-yard return of an errant pass from Bucknell freshman quarterback Travis Kopp. Bucknell countered with its only two scores of the game before the half, the first a 14-yard pass from Kopp to Whitey Berardinelli, who caught eight balls for 149 yards, and a Brian Henesey two-yard run with time expiring in the half. Sandwiched between those scores, though, was a two-yard touchdown pass from Kempa to Lookenbill, and Lehigh took a 28-13 halftime edge. The second half was one of pure frustration for Bucknell, as it was never able to mount a serious scoring threat while allowing two more scores. Kempa hit Hamm at 3:22 of the third quarter to cap a 14-play, 5:28 drive, then Lookenbill with 9:49 left in the game for a two-yard score set up by an interception and return by junior linebacker Mike Yadush. Everyone on the Lehigh side admitted the easy win was especially timely after last week's unexpected loss to Colgate. A shot of confidence was just what Lehigh needed to begin preparations for the Lafayette game. "We felt we had something to prove today," Kempa said afterward. "Especially after last week and going into next week against Lafayette. We needed to rebuild our confidence and get back on track for next week." "We played well in all three phases of the game," said Small. "It (the blowout win) was what we needed. We wanted to come out of this game feeling good about things." Especially gratifying for Lehigh was the defensive effort, which had caused concern in previous weeks. "A lot of people questioned us," Clark said of he and his defensive cohorts. "They said we weren't the same defense that played earlier in the season. So we wanted to come out and prove it." Next week, they have their final chance to make a statement. LU GRID NOTES: Kempa now has 30 TD passes on the year with a game left...Kempa's 260 completions and 3,289 yards on the year put him in position to surpass Todd Brunner's single-season records of 273 completions and 3,519 yards. Horace Hamm, who caught seven balls for 97 yards Saturday, now has 68 receptions on the year, fourth best in Lehigh history...with five catches against the Bison, Rich Clark moved into second place in career receptions with 156.
