Vol. 28—No. 1 SEPTEMBER 16, 1985 BETHLEHEM, PA. Engineers Win Wild Air Show Five Horn-to-Benn TD's Key Opening Day Victory (B&W photo by BILL WILSON) KEVIN STANSBERRY (28) reaches for a Marty Horn pass. Stansberry rushed for 82 yards and two touchdowns, but the big show was in the air. New Coaches Named Athletic Officials Are Promoted Three members of Lehigh's athletics administration, Craig Anderson, Karen Adams and Greg Schulze, have received promotions. Anderson is now associate director of athletics, Adams is assistant director and primary women's administrator, and Schulze is assistant director. Anderson, assistant director of athletics, business manager of athletics and athletic ticket manager since 1982, will retain his duties as business and ticket manager, as well as adding major responsibilities in all areas of athletics administration, including the business office, the ticket operation, the coordination of team travel, team scheduling and game-day administration. Adams replaces Judy Turner Baxter, who served five years as assistant director of athletics and head of the women's program, and eight seasons as head coach of field hockey and women's lacrosse. Baxter resigned her administrative and coaching duties to begin a family. She had a baby boy at the beginning of this month. Schulze, director of intramu- rals and recreation at the Uni versity, serves as coordinator of all athletics and recreation facilities. He is also responsible for outside events and the coordination of the year-end student recognition banquet. FRAN McCAFFERY Fran McCaffery, who has served the past two seasons as a Lehigh assistant coach, has been selected as head coach of the Engineers men's basketball program. In other coaching changes at the University, MaryBeth Holder was named head coach of women's field hockey and lacrosse, Donna Koehler was appointed as head coach of volleyball, Hope Donnell was tapped as the new head coach of softball, and Mark Will-Weber named as women's cross country mentor. *McCaffery, 26, succeeds Tom Schneider, who recently resigned after two years at the Lehigh helm to become head coach at the University of Pennsylvania. A 1977 high school All- American at Philadelphia's La Salle High, McCaffery was a starter on the 1977-78 Wake Forest Univesity varsity five before transferring to Penn, where he graduated from the Wharton School of Finance and Commerce with a bachelor of science degree in economics in 1982. While at Penn, McCaffery played on two Ivy League Championship squads, and participated in two NCAA tournaments and one National Invitation Tournament. In 1981- 82, he was voted Most Inspirational Player of Penn's NCAA tourney team that won 14 straight games. ""Holder, an assistant coach of field hockey and women's (Continued on Page 2) By JOHN MISSIMER *85 If Saturday's game was any indication of what Lehigh's football season is going to be like, Engineer fans had better glue themselves to their stadium cushions and prepare for a lot of action. In a contest that went back and forth almost as much as a tennis game, the Brown and White outlasted Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP), 49- 41, in front of an opening day crowd of 10,500. These fans witnessed an aerial circus in which 92 passes were thrown and 77 completed for a total of 875 yards gained through the air, and nine touchdown passes. Seniors Marty Horn and Ren- nie Benn from Short Hills, N. J., continued their assault on the Engineer record book by connecting for touchdown passes of 11, 44, 40, 65, and 19 yards. For the day, Horn completed 33-of- 43 passes for 415 yards, while Benn caught 14 for 266 yards. The 33 completions and 415 yards, along with five touchdown passes are all Engineer records. Benn tied his own record for catches, set records for yards receiving and touchdown passes caught, and for scoring in a single game, eclipsing Jack Rizzo's mark of 25 points set in 1971. While Horn and Benn concentrated on setting a few Lehigh marks, Indiana quarterback Rich Ingold was busy writing a few chapters of his own for the Big Indian record journal. The senior transfer from the University of South Carolina completed 34-of-49 passes for 460 yards and four touchdowns. On the initial drive, IUP drove to the Engineer 21, and barefooted kicker John Sandstrom booted a 37 yard field goal. Lehigh came right back, driving 77 yards on 16 plays with Horn and Benn hooking up on their first touchdown of the game with 2:05 left in the first quarter. The scoring play covered 11 yards. The Engineer defense was able to stop Ingold and the IUP offense after three plays, and when Bob Fulton's punt traveled only 15 yards the Engineers took over on the Indiana 35. Six plays later, at 13:20 of the second quarter, sophomore Kevin Stansberry (Mt. Bethel, Pa.) plunged over from the 1 for a touchdown. Sophomore Michael Beattie (Danbury, Ct.), who was good on all seven extra point attempts, booted the ball through the uprights and the Engineers had a 14-3 lead. Stansberry carried the ball five times in the drive, with a 15-yard burst to the IUP 9 the big play.
