SUESS) THE ENGINEER DEFENSE, pictured in action on opening day against Indiana, came up witn several big plays against UNH. But the Wildcat running game proved too much for the Brown and White. Varsity Sports Week Booters Win Third Straight After an early season slump the soccer team has begun to catch fire, capturing 1-0 victories last week over ECC rival Rider and Wilkes. In other action, the field hockey team was defeated by Pennsylvania, 3-1, and by Colgate, 2-1, before bouncing back with an impressive 2-0 victory over Vermont. The volleyball team defeated LaSalle in three straight games. The men harriers dropped matches to West Chester and Kutztown. In improving its record to 4-7- 1, the soccer team exhibited strong defense with just enough offense. Against Rider, the booters battled to a scoreless tie after 90 minutes of play. In overtime freshman Paul Thorsen (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) scored on an assist from senior Alex Tosi (Landsdale, N.J.). The win was the first in the conference for the Engineers. Against Wilkes the Engineers, dominated play, but couldn't find the net until in the last three minutes. Senior Chris Tihanksy (Bethlehem, Pa.) took a Mike Holding (Deerfield Beach, Fla.) pass and put the ball in the net. Sophomore goalie Eric Sejourne (Boca Raton, Fla.) hasn't allowed a goal in three games. The field hockey team took some time off from ECC opponents and found out that life outside the conference can be tough. In capturing its fifth straight victory of the season since an opening day defeat by Lafayette, UNH amassed 406 yards rushing. The total was 49 yards more than the previous five opponents combined had gained against Lehigh. And, most of the yardage came after All-America tailback Andre Garron (who scored 5 touchdowns two years ago against Lehigh) was forced to leave the contest early in the second quarter. Although the Engineer defense was battered throughout the contest, the unit came alive at crucial times to make the big plays and keep the Brown & White in the game. After Lehigh kicked off to UNH to open the game, the Wildcats drove to the Engineer 24. The defense held, and Eric Facey split the uprights for a 42-yard field goal. Lehigh's offense couldn't get anything going and Steve Banco (West Lawn, Pa.) uncorked a beautiful 56-yard punt that sent UNH back to its own 34. On the next play Banco (7 punts for a 46.8 avg.) intercepted Wildcat quarterback Rich Byrne on the Engineer 47. Marty Horn (Short Hills, N.J.) connected with Rennie Benn (Short Hills, N.J.) for a UNH 31, Lehigh 17 Leeman Inducted Into Hall Former wrestling mentor Gerry Leeman was honored October 12 when he was inducted into the University of Northern Iowa's Athletic Hall of Fame. Leeman, who guided the Engineer matmen to 18 winning seasons in 18 years at the helm, won a national title in 1946 while wrestling for the Panthers. He went on to capture a silver medal at the 1948 London Olympic Games. While at Lehigh, Leeman compiled an impressive 161-38-4 dual meet record. His teams won six EIWA tournaments and • earned a dozen top-10 NCAA finishes. The Osage, Iowa, native GERRY LEEMAN coached six Lehigh men to nine NCAA titles and 23 wrestlers to 37 EIWA crowns. Lehigh turned the ball over to New Hampshire on the 23. The Wildcats continued to move the ball well, but the Engineer defense, led by Mike Muchowski (Florence, N.J.), toughened up inside the 20-yard line and pressured Facey into missing field goal attempts of 47 and 25 yards. Muchowski delivered the blow on Garron which sent the tailback to the hospital to check for internal injuries. New Hampshire marched deep into Lehigh territory late in the second quarter. With 1:54 remaining before intermission Byrne tossed 10 yards to Glenn Mathews for a score, giving the Wildcats a 10-0 advantage at the half. When the Engineer offense stalled after moving the ball to the UNH 49 on the initial possession of the second half, Banco found the coffin corner, punting the ball out of bounds on the three. New Hampshire couldn't get out of the hole and was forced to punt from deep in its own end zone. Lehigh took over on the UNH 25, but couldn't find paydirt. Michael Beattie (Danbury, Conn.) was called upon to boot a 27-yard field goal. Wildcat Scott Perry then took over where Garron had stopped and began to run wild through the Lehigh defense. Along with fullback Mike Shriner, Perry led his team to the Engineer 1 where Byrne plunged through the line to increase the lead to 17-3. Shreck fumbled on Lehigh's next possession, and Perry ripped through the line for a 31- yard touchdown romp that gave the Wildcats a 24-3 advantage at the end of the third quarter. Suddenly the Engineer offense came to life, and for the first time in 14 quarters an opponent scored a touchdown on the New Hampshire defense. Todd Melton (Berlin, N.J.) hauled in a 14-yard Horn pass with 14:11 remaining in the game. Although the two-point conversion failed, it was obvious that Lehigh felt that it was back in the game. UNH started to drive on its next possession, but junior Bob Fithian (Aston, Pa.) made a pretty interception of a Byrne pass to give Lehigh the ball with 11:31 left.
