Name Class Address Mail to Lehigh University Alumni Assn., Alumni Memorial Bldg. 27, Bethlehem, Pa. 18015 Bid For Tie Short After TD With 0:00 Left By JOHN MISSIMER '85 The Lehigh football team ran out of miracle finishes Saturday, as Todd Melton fell a foot short of the goal line on a two- point conversion attempt with no time remaining, which would have given Lehigh a tie with William and Mary. The Tribe escaped Taylor Stadium with a 31-29 win over the Engineers, in a game played before a Freshman Parents Day crowd of 10,800. Lehigh drove 93 yards in the final 1:49, drawing to within two points on a 26-yard touchdown pass from Marty Horn (Short Hills, N.J.) to Todd Melton (Berlin, N.J.) as time expired. On the ensuing conversion attempt, Horn completed a pass to Melton, but the tall flanker was tackled before he could reach paydirt. Even though the game was not decided until the final play, the outcome was greatly affected by the Engineers' failure to take advantage of scoring opportunites earlier in the contest. Prior to the final mad drive, Lehigh had marched to within the William and Mary 15 four times, coming away with just six points on a pair of Michael Beattie (Danbury, Conn.) field goals. The game showcased two of the premier quarterbacks in Div. I—AA, with Horn and Stan Yagiello combining for 61 completions on 105 attempts for 717 yards and four touchdowns. Horn, playing perhaps the best game of his career, set Lehigh records for attempts (62), completions (37) and total offense (442). He tossed for 411 yards, scored one touchdown rushing, and was not intercepted. Yagiello wasted no time in demonstrating his form. On the game's fourth play he lofted a 43-yard pass to Ron Gillam, moving the ball to the Lehigh 7. Two plays later, Michael demons scooted into the end zone. Peter Schreck (West Lawn, Pa.) collected a 7-yard scoring THE SOUTH MOUNTAINEER Publisher—Dennis Diehl '70 Editor—Roger Clow Assoc. Lehigh went up by 14-7 when Horn dove in from the 1 with 57 seconds left in the first frame. The plunge crowned an 11-play, 72-yard drive that featured three passes for 32 yards to Ren- nie Benn (Short Hills, N.J.) and a 10-yard strike to Melton. The Tribe held the Engineers off the board for the first 14:50 of the second quarter, posting 10 points of their own on a 37-yard field goal and a 2-yard run. Beattie punched through his second field goal, a 25-yarder, with 10 seconds left in the half to even the count at 17-17. Lehigh's first possession of the second half began in good field position at the Tribe 36, following a punt of just 13 yards. But after driving to the 1, Lehigh was forced to settle for Beattie's third field goal, from 18 yards, to go up by 20-17. The Engineers got the ball right back when freshman safety Glenn Comisac (Tamaqua, Pa.) picked off Yagiello's first pass on the Indian 36. Again the Tribe dodged what could have been a fatal bullet. Lehigh failed to turn the opportunity to account after driving to the William and Mary 8. A poor snap on yet another Beattie field goal try left the Engineers with nothing. The Tribe seized the lead on a 59-yard bomb from Yagiello to Gillam with 5:53 left in the third period. Beattie's third field goal brought Lehigh to within one, 24-23, in the waning moments of the stanza. On their first possession of the last quarter, Lehigh once again marched deep into William and Mary territory and failed to score. The Engineers moved to the Tribe 10, stalled, and saw Beattie's fifth field goal attempt sail wide from 27 yards out. Taking over with 5:31 left, after a series of punts back and forth, Yagiello drove the Indians 67 yards, tossing 14 yards to demons for a score with 1:52 left. But Horn was up to the challenge. Completing eight passes, Horn, taking the first snap away back on the Lehigh 3, moved the Engineers ever closer to the goal. Seven seconds remained on the clock—time for just one play—when he lofted the ball toward the end zone and Melton, whose leaping catch gave the Engineers hope for a tie. NOTES: Horn was honored as ECAC Div. I-AA Co-Offensive Player of the Week. He shared the award with Gillam, who made 10 catches for 214 yards .. . The coaches' awards went to center Dave Whitehead (offense), junior outside linebacker Lou Sofianakos (defense) and sophomore defensive back Terry Williams (special teams). Sofianakos (Elizabeth, N.J.) led the Lehigh defense with 14 tackles, including one for a loss. Williams (Philadelphia) made two important stops. For Whitehead (Bethlehem) it was the second such honor this year . .. Captains for the West Chester game will be Sofianakos and fullback Steve Cirucci (Elizabeth, Pa.).
