Miracle Finish at Sheridan Four Matmen are Crowned; Bloomsburg is Overtaken THAD TURNER accepts the Sheridan Tournament team trophy from Director of Athletics Dick Gibney. The championship was Lehigh's third Sheridan title, the first since 1982. Women Win Harvard Tourney The women's basketball team rebounded from an 81-60 loss to nationally ranked St. Joseph's earlier in the week to capture the Harvard Invitational tournament. Shawn Steward (Columbus, Ohio), was selected as the tour- nament's Most Valuable Player, as she totaled 45 points in the Engineers two victories over Texas Christian University and Harvard. Against TCU, Steward pumped in 20 points in the 72-70 win. Liz Feeley (Worcester, Mass.) added 16 points, and Cathy Engelbert (Collingswood, N.J.) contributed with 14. In the final contest, the Engineers breezed to a 77-58triumph with 12, were the other Engineers in double figures. Lehigh led at the half, 36-29. It out scored the hosts, who beat Long Island University in the opener, 41-29, in the second half to coast to the win. Engelbert was also named to the All-Tournment team. In the loss to St. Joseph's Engelbert led the Lehigh scorers with 20 points, while Steward had 17, and Feeley 15. Teresa Carmichael, the Hawks 6-0 center, led all scorers with 30 points. Before departing for Iowa, the team defeated Manhattan College in Stabler Arena behind a 33 point effort by Vernon Doswell (Somerset, N.J.). 95-69. In the opening game, the Engineers gave UAB a scare, and actually led 39-35, early in the second half, before succumbing to the 17th ranked Blazers. Queenan led all scorers with 23 points, while Michael Androlewicz (Turnersville. N.J.), added 13. Against Iowa, upset losers to Arkansas State in the opening round. Queenan tallied 29 points, but the Hawkeyes proved to be too strong for the much smaller hoopsters. who never led in the contest, and tied only once. 10-10 with 16:08 left in the firat half, on Androlewicz's layup. Androlewicz scored 12, and Doswell added 10 in the losing effort. Doswell pumped in 23 first- half points against Manhattan, en route to his Stabler Arena Lehigh single game scoring record. He now holds the record of 33 points along with Queenan. who set his mark last year against (Continued on Page 2) By JOHN MISSIMER '85 No one in the crowd of about 2,500 in Stabler Arena on Saturday night gave Lehigh much of a chance to win the team title in the seventh annual Billy Sheridan Memorial Wrestling Tournament. Following a disastrous semifinal round, in which the Engineers won only four out of nine bouts, the grapplers trailed Bloomsburg, 118—106.50. Making the outlook even bleaker, was the fact that the Huskies had six wrestlers vying for championships. If Lehigh was to dethrone the defending champions, all four men would have to capture championships, and Bloomsburg would have to loose just about all theirs. Well, the impossible happened, as Peter Yozzo, Tom Toggas, Paul Diekel, and Bernie Brown walked away with individual titles, and Bloomsburg got shut out. As a result, the Engineers captured the team title, outdistancing Bloomsburg, 133.50—121.00 Among the many doubters in the crowd was head coach Thad Turner. "I didn't think we stood much of a chance to win coming into tonight," said Turner. "We just wrestled well, hopefully this will give us some momentum for the upcoming meets." While Lehigh crowned four champions, it was the strong wrestling of Engineers in the consolation bracket which helped propel the Brown & White to victory. Mike Price (Bloomsbury, N.J.), 5th at 125, Jim Frick (Columbia, N.J.), 3rd at 134, C.J. Mears (No. Canton, Ohio), 3rd at 150, and Kerry Ritrievi (Levittown, Pa.). 3rd at 167 all won bouts on Saturday night to push the Engineers down the stretch. Of the four champions, Yozzo (Sayville, N.Y.) had the easiest time. The junior All-American, who is currently ranked 3rd by the Amateur Wrestling News at 142. pinned Mark Nace of Trenton State in 3:25 in the first round, disposed of Dave Wlodarz of Cleveland State via a technical fall. (18-2. 6:00) in the semifinals, and then packed away last year's Sheridan 134 pound champion Marty King of Bloomsburg with a headlock at 4:44 of the final bout. At 158 pounds. Toggas (York. Pa.) used 11 third period points to post a 15-5 decision over Jeff Cardwell of Oregon State in the finals. Toggas, still recovering from a rib injury, utilized a tight- wrist tilt to catch the Beaver three times for back points. Prior to the finals, Toggas defeated Frank McKeon of Cleveland State, 10-6, and Chuck Murray of North Caroline State, 5-3. Lehigh's other All-American, captain Diekel (Whitehall, N.Y.) biggest problems of the tournament was finding someone who would mix it up. After recording a fall over Mick Pazinko of Trenton State in the first round, Diekel decisioned Bruce Wallace of Bloomsburg, 7-3. The score, however, is not indicitive of how much Diekel really dominated the bout. as Wallace continually used stalling techniques to avoid the constant pressure applied by Diekel. His final bout against Tim Mondale of Oregon State wasn't much better, but Diekel still emerged with his second Sheridan title as a result of a 10-1 victory. Brown (Bethlehem, Pa.), won his first Sheridan title on the strength of a riding time point, to record a 1-0 decision over Ron Ippolite of Bloomsburg. The senior heavyweight had some problems moving the bigger wrestler, as Brown did get in on many single leg attempts, but was unable to convert.
