Vol. 28 — No. 11 November 26, 1985 BETHLEHEM, PA. Engineers Down Leopards (B&W Photo by BILL WILSON) MARTY HORN turned in a stellar performance in his last varsity game, scrambling effectively and leading the Engineers to a 24-7 halftime bulge by completing 19 of 24 passes for 226 yards in the first two periods. Matmen Conduct Final Trials; Yozzo OW at East Stroudsburg The wrestling team held its annual final trials Nov. 19 before 1,200 fans in Grace Hall. Seven "official" trial bouts were conducted, as well as two exhibition bouts. Junior Dave Garner (Litiz, Pa.) decisioned junior Steve Vetsch (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), 9-8, in the closest bout of the evening at heavyweight. Garner, a starter at 177 last year, used a riding time point to record the win. Senior Bernie Brown (Bethlehem, Pa.) did not participate in the trials because of a sprained ankle. Brown is expected to be in the Engineer line-up at the Mat Town USA Tournament. In another close bout, junior Jim Frick (Columbia, N.J.) earned a hard-fought, 2-1 decisional 134 over senior Todd Cassan (Mercer Island, Wash.). Frick recorded a first-period takedown and then held Cassan to an escape to preserve the victory. At 118, freshman Rick Hart- Hoop Squads Triumph Lehigh's basketball teams opened their seasons Monday night in impressive fashion, as the men defeated Kenyon College, 85-53, in Stabler Center, while the women downed Seton Hall, 72-65, in East Orange, N.J. The men were led by sophomore All-American Daren Queenan (Norristown, Pa.) and sophomore Tim Russell (East Patchogue, N.Y.) who each netted 15 points. Sophomore Bill Cheslock (Hicksville, N.Y.) chipped in with 12 points and seven rebounds. Lehigh jumped out to an early 15-2 lead, and never looked back against the out-manned Lords. All 15 players on the Lehigh ros- ter saw action as Fran McCaffery made his debut as head coach. In the women's contest, the Engineers overcame a 31-29 halftime defecit taking advantage of a 71% field goal performance in the second half. While the Engineers couldn't seem to miss, Seton Hall couldn't make anything as the Pirates shot 35% from the floor. Leading the way for Lehigh was senior co-captain Liz Fee- ley (Worcester, Mass.) with 19 points. Feeley made 8 of eleven field goal attempts. Senior Shawn Steward (Columbus, Ohio) added 16 points, and senior co-captain Cathy Engelbert (Collingswood,1 N.J.) con- (Continued on Page 2) man (Lakewood, Ohio) was impressive in recording a technical fall over fellow freshman Gary May (Fairfax, Va.). While Hartman had little problem capturing the 118 pound slot, highly touted frosh John Epperly (Fairfax, Va.) found out that experience is sometimes more important than talent. Epperly, wresltling for the 126 position, gave up a five-point move to senior Mike Price (Bloomsbury, N.J.) late in the third period. Price recorded a 12-4 win. In the other bouts, senior C.J. Mears (No. Canton, Ohio) decisioned sophomore Chad Wat- kins (Ocean, N.J.), 13-7, at 150; junior Tom Toggas recorded a 17-2 technical fall over sophomore Mike Ekberg (Danville, Pa.) at 158, and senior Kerry Ritrievi (Levittown, Pa.) pinned sophomore Jim Dodd (Westfield, N.J.) in 2:04 at 167. The two Engineer returning All-Americans, Peter Yozzo (Sayville, N.Y.) and captain Paul Diekel (Whitehall, N.Y.). looked impressive in exhibition bouts. Yozzo, made quick work of freshman Mark Vowell (Dumfries, Va.) at 142, recording an 18-3 technical fall in 2:38. Diekel wrestled 177-pounder Eyvind Boyesen (Kempton, (Continued on Page 2) Horn Named MVP 2nd Time; Secondary Proves Mettle By JOHN MISSIMER '85 Lehigh's defense, under fire all year, came of age against Lafayette, and the Engineers survived a strong second-half Leopard comeback to earn a hard-fought 24-19 victory in the 121st meeting in college football's most played rivalry. A young unit, exploited for many yards through the air throughout the year, the Engineer secondary saved its best for last, recording three interceptions. Two first-half turnovers led directly to Lehigh scores, but it was freshman Glenn Comisac (Tamaqua, Pa.) whose interception on the Lehigh 15 with 30 seconds remaining in the game saved the day for Lehigh. The defense was forced to come up with the big plays, after the offense, which looked unstoppable in the first half, was contained after halftime. On their first possession the Engineers drove 51 yards in 11 plays, with freshman tailback Lee Blum (Staten Island, N.Y.) scoring from the four. Sophomore Michael Beattie (Dan- bury, Conn.) added the PAT and Lehigh had a 7-0 lead with 8:39 remaining in the first quarter. In this drive, Marty Horn (Short Hills, N.J.) completed three passes, including a 14- yarder to Rennie Benn (Short Hills, N.J.), and Blum carried the ball seven straight times for 24 yards. Lafayette received a gift from the Engineers in the form of a Sean Pitzer (Dallastown, Pa.) fumble of a Joe Genduso punt on the Lehigh 24. Lafayette received a gift from the Engineers in the form of a Sean Pitzer (Dallastown, Pa.) fumble of a Joe Genduso punt on the Lehigh 24. The Leopards took advantage of this Lehigh miscue, with quarterback Frank Baur delivering a 24-yard touchdown pass to Gordon Bullock to tie the score. Lehigh appeared to be stopped on its next possession, but a personal foul against Lafayette following a late hit on a third down play allowed the Engineers to hold onto the ball. The Engineers marched 65 yards, scoring on a 25-yard field goal by Beattie on the second play of the second quarter. It was Beattie's 13th field goal of the season, setting a new school record, surpassing the standard of 12 set by Ted Iobst in 1978. Now it was time for the defense to shine, as sophomore Clifton Hubbard (Philadelphia, Pa.) picked off a pass on the Engineer 43 which led to a touchdown. With Horn completing four passes, Lehigh drove 57yards in just five plays. Senior flanker Todd Melton (Berlin, N.J.) caught the final pass of the drive from Horn, a ten-yard bullet in the right corner of the end zone which boosted Lehigh's lead to 17-7.
