The game was played before the Tribe's biggest home crowd since Custer's last stand, more than 17,000, on a beautiful homecoming afternoon in his toric Williamsburg. The first game played by these teams, soon to be Colonial League rivals, was almost over before it started. But Lehigh dodged bullets, or arrows, early in the game, as the Indians collected only three points out of two excellent scoring chances William & Mary 24, LU 10 following Lehigh mistakes on its first two possessions. William and Mary got only a 22-yard field goal after taking over on the Lehigh 24 following a bad snap to the punter, and on the Lehigh 23 following a fumble. Admission is free and it's a chance to see a sports double-header as the hoop squad, with many starters back and several freshmen with high potential, gets the hardcourt campaign under way. 3 Named To Star Team; Baxter Coach Of The Year Lehigh brought home its second straight East Coast Conference (ECC) field hockey title, edging Delaware by 2-1 on penalty strokes in the championship tilt, following a 2-0, double-overtime victory over Lafayette in the semi-final round. The Engineers and Blue Hens played through three overtime periods tied at one, before resorting to strokes. Lehigh clicked on four of five strokes, while Delaware, the host team, managed to get but one past junior goalkeeper Patti Lee (Cran- ford, N.J.). Lehigh's Cheryl Miller (Cherry Hill, N.J.) broke a scoreless deadlock with 30 seconds left in the first half. The lead stood almost long enough. With 9:08 left in regulation time, Delaware's Anne Wilkinson tied the score. That was it until the strokes. Firing the ball past Hen net- minder Jaren Zurlo were Amy Austin (Nashville, Tenn.), co- captain Karyn Yost (North- woods, Pa.), Miller and Mary Weiner (Cherry Hill, N.J.). Lehigh was credited with one "goal" for winning the stroke Meeting No. 120 competition, thus the final of 2- 1. Lee, Yost and co-captain Sue Coursen (Collingswood, N.J.) were elected to the ECC all-star team for the second year in a row. Head Coach Judy Baxter was named ECC coach of the year. In the semi-final tilt, Lehigh used goals by Gail Thistle (Huntingdon Valley, Pa.), assisted by Missy Miller (Cherry Hill, N.J.), Cheryl's sister; and Weiner, assisted by Carla Juliani (Collingswood, N.J.), both in the second overtime, to best the Leopards for the fourth time in two years. Lehigh finished with a mark of 13-5-2, and a perfect 8-0 vs. ECC teams. Cheryl Miller was the team's leading scorer, with 10 goals and six assists for 16 points. Yost was second, 8-5— 13; followed by June Mauceri (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.), 6-1—7; Weiner, 2-5—7; Austin, 5-1—6; and Kathy Hynes (Lake Grove, N.Y.), 5-0—5. Lee allowed 29 goals in 20 games, an average of 1.45, and made 228 saves, for a save percentage of .887. Nationwide Telecast The Lehigh University Alumni Assn. has completed negotiations with Lafayette College, WLVT-Ch. 39 in Bethlehem and SPN Cable TV of Tulsa, Okla., for a ' 'live" nationwide TV telecast of this year's Lehigh-Lafayette game, Saturday, Nov. 17, noon Eastern Standard time. The nationwide hookup will be available to those who subscribe to cable affiliates that include SPN programs. For the noon to 3:00 p.m. time slot that day, the total number of households included is more than nine million. Alumni should check their local listings to confirm. Thirteen Lehigh alumni clubs (see list) have capitalized on this new project by scheduling major get-togethers, most to include our friends from Lafayette. Lehigh alumnus Edward L. Taylor III '54, chairman and chief executive officer of SPN, was instrumental in making the broadcast possible, while advertising slots purchased by E.F. Hutton, Chrysler Corporation and the Pepsi-Cola Co. helped support the project. Efforts are already underway to consider expanding the telecast for next fall. The telecast, originating from WLVT, Channel 39 in Bethlehem, with Shel Siegel doing play-by-play, will be replayed in the Lehigh Valley area Sunday, Nov. 18, at 10:45 a.m. Both the live telecast and the replay will be preceded by WLVT's 15-minute sports show, featuring sports editors of the valley's major newspapers.
