Victories in baseball, 18-9 and 8-6, and track, 117-46, left Lehigh with a 6-3 advantage in the trophy series with only golf, tennis and lacrosse matches remaining. Lafayette won the trophy outright last season for the first time in its 16-year existence since competition began in 1967. Lehigh has taken it 12 times and there have been three ties. It was only the second double- header sweep over the Leopards in trophy history. In 1978 Lehigh won 8-7 and 3-2. The first game featured 30 hits, 17 of them by the Engineers, and 10 home runs including three by Lafayette's John Bellucci. The second contest resulted in 22 hits, 15 of them by Lehigh, and three homers were belted. So there were 52 hits in all. The Engineers' batting heroes were Mike Matto of Stanton, NJ, and Mike Coryell of Trenton, NJ, each of whom collected four hits in the first game and two in the nightcap for a total of six apiece. Matto had a homer in the opener and Coryell one in the second game. Lehigh's key pitcher turned out to be reliever John Patten of Allentown, Pa., who got the save in each contest. Brian Gara of Cazenovia, NY, was the winner in the first game and John Mark of Stroudsburg, Pa., got the victory in the second.
