Vol. 25 — No. 22 APRIL 6, 1983 BETHLEHEM, PA SRD Dinner Scheduled May 5 Early Drills Start For Gridders Twenty-six lettermen are among 80 players participating in spring football practice at Lehigh. The Engineers are preparing for their 100th season next fall. They played their first game Oct. 25, 1884, against Lafayette. This has become college football's most-played series. In the early years the neighboring rivals met twice, or even three times, a year. Next Nov. 19 they'll clash at Bethlehem for the 118th time. John Whitehead, moving toward his eighth season as head coach and 17th year at Lehigh, is in charge of drills at the Saucon Fields athletic complex. The Engineers have 20 workouts scheduled Mondays through Fridays from 4:40 p.m. until 6 p.m. during April. The group of 26 lettermen on the spring roster includes 12 from last year's offensive platoon and 14 from the defensive squad. The offensive dozen includes tight end Jeff Hunt of Nazareth, Pa., split ends Jim Davidson of Selinsgrove, Pa., and Richie Benn of Short Hills, N.J., tackles Jim Thompson of Lansdale, Pa., and Terry Bollinger of Harrisburg, Pa., center Dave Whitehead of Bethlehem, Pa. Also quarterbacks Marty Horn of Short Hills, N.J., and Tony Semler of Allentown, Pa., halfbacks Dominic LaSelva of Pottsville, Pa., Jim Ancel of Baltimore, Md., and Peter Schreck of West Lawn, Pa., and fullback Doug Ertz of West Lawn, Pa. Returning defensive letter- (Continued on Page 2) KEVIN KOPP MUFFET McGRAW BOB SHAPS 3 New Spring Sports Coaches Three new head coaches— Muffet McGraw, Kevin Kopp and Bob Shaps—are directing teams this season in Lehigh's spring sports program. McGraw succeeds Maureen Frederick with the softball squad, Kopp follows Brad Wyckoff with the men's tennis team and Shaps is the replacement for Jeff Tipping in men's lacrosse. All three of the former mentors resigned. Shaps played on three national championship lacrosse teams at Hobart College, while lettering four years, and his coach was Dave Urick who served as coach in the world games. McGraw was an assistant basketball and head softball coach at St. Joseph's, in Philadelphia, before coming to the Engineers. Last winter she was named East Coast Conference basketball coach-of-the-year in the women's division. Kopp was an outstanding member of Lehigh tennis teams. He and Shaps are graduate students. Five other spring head coaches return including Stan Schultz (baseball), Karen Adams (women's tennis), Judy Baxter (women's lacrosse), WillTrexler (men's tennis) and John Covert (track and field). Frosh Hurler Wins 2 Games Brian Gara, a 6-3, 215-pound freshman righthander from Cazenovia, N.Y., posted a pair of victories in early-season competition as Lehigh's baseball team won three times in its first eight starts. One of the triumphs was a real eye-opener as the Engineers shocked Armstrong State, 8-5, snapping a 23-game winning streak held by the Savannah, Ga., collegians. Earlier, on their spring vacation training trip to Georgia Southern in Statesboro, the Basketball Squad Honored Members of the Lehigh men's basketball squad, and their coaches, were honored at the 3rd annual Friends of Lehigh Basketball dinner in The Bethlehem Club. Joseph Workman presided as master of ceremonies. Dr. Stuart K. Webster, chairman of the Department of Accounting and Law at the University, and head coach Brian Hill were speakers. Five senior members on the squad—Brian Collins, Rick Kamin, Fred Ketcho, Tom Pauley and Dave Andreychik, the latter unable to attend the dinner —received special awards. Other awards went to Kamin (unsung hero), Bill Boesch (out- standig newcomer), Paul Wick man (most improved) and Ketcho (most valuable player). The Sixth Man award, to an alumnus and/or friend, went to Greg Falkenbach. The Lehigh rebound record-holder was a broadcaster during games last winter and chairman of post- game "fast-break" receptions held at Stabler Center. Hill introduced members of the squad along with assistant coaches Sal Mentesana and Fred Hill, his nephew. The election of captains for 1983-84 was delayed pending early practice sessions when four starting positions will be up for grabs. The Engineers, 10-16 during the campaign, beat arch-rival Lafayette twice in three meetings. Engineers had dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Armstrong, 8-5 and 7-6. Gara's first victory had come over Wittenberg College, on the Georgia Southern diamond, 13- 6. Lehigh also lost a wild one to the host Eagles, 15-14, and 7-1 decision to Navy on the way south.
