Vol. 25 — No. 10 NOVEMBER 23, 1982 BETHLEHEM, PA. Lafayette Winner In No. 118 New Contract For Coach John Whitehead, head coach of football at Lehigh since 1976, has accepted a new three-year contract. The announcement was made by Bill Leckonby, director of athletics at the University. Whitehead, who came to the Engineers as offensive line coach in 1967 and was promoted to the head coaching berth nine years later following the departure of Fred Dunlap to Colgate, has directed Lehigh teams to 57 victories against 23 losses and two ties. This has placed him second among Lehigh's all-time "winn- ingest" football coaches. Only Leckonby, whose teams won 85 games from 1946 through 1961, hung up more victories. "He has done an exceptionally fine job," said Leckonby, "and the University felt that an extension of his contract was in order." STANFORD CAPTAIN PETE LIKINS Wrestling Hall of Fame Berth For LU President By SAM CONNOR Public Information Director Lehigh University Dr. Peter Likins, age 46, president of Lehigh, has been elected a member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. Announcement was made by Robert Dellinger, director of the Hall of Fame headquartered in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Dr. Likins, a scholar-athlete during his undergraduate career at Stanford, was chosen to be included in the Hall of Fame's "Career Corner," a special division in the wrestling museum for men who not only excelled in wrestling but also are excelling in their career and life after graduation from college. The Lehigh president, who was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and Tau Beta Pi at Stanford and was captain of the varsity wrestling team in 1957, was undefeated in dual meets at 137 and 147 pounds throughout four years of intercollegiate competition. He earned silver medals in the Pacific Coast Conference Championships and the AAU Far Western Freestyle Championships as a collegian. As a high school wrestler in Santa Cruz, Cal-, he was named out standing Wrestler at the Northern California State Championships. Dr. Likins joins such men in the Hall of Fame's "Career Corner" as Dr. Norman E. Bor- laug, Nobel Peace Prize laureate, who wrestled at the University of Minnesota and is now an internationally-known Wrestling Telecasts Sunday morning delayed telecasts of Lehigh wrestling meets, on WLVT-TV Ch. 39, will start at 11 a.m. instead of 10 a.m. as originally planned. They begin Dec. 5 with Lehigh vs Wilkes. Finals of the Sheridan Tournament will be shown Friday, Dec. 10, at 9 p.m. Other early-season feature playback dates: Lehigh vs Iowa- Sunday, Dec. 12, 11 a.m. Lehigh vs Northern Iowa—Sunday, Jan. 9, 11 a.m. Lehigh vs Iowa State- Sunday, Jan. 16, 11 a.m. agronomist in Mexico City; Donald Rumsfeld, former U.S. Secretary of Defense, who wrestled for Princeton; Carl Albert, retired Speaker of U.S. House of Representatives, who wrestled for Oklahoma; Edwin G. Corr, current Ambassador to Bolivia, who also wrestled for Oklahoma; Kirk Douglas, film star, who wrestled for St. Lawrence, and others. Before becoming president of Lehigh on July 1, 1982, Dr. Likins served as provost of Columbia University. Prior to that position he was associated with the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) and the Jet Propulsion Lab of the California Institute of Technology as an educator and engineer with an international reputation for substantial contributions to the field of spacecraft dynamics and control. He earned his S.M. in civil engineering at M.I.T. in 1958 and his Ph.D. in engineering mechanics in 1965 from Stanford, from where he also earned his B.S. degree in civil engineering in 1957. He and his wife served as football and wrestling coaches for youth teams in Park Ridge, N.J., where they resided with their six children before moving to Bethlehem. Leopards Gain 34-6 Victory Before 18,000; Godbolt Stars Lehigh's hopes of avoiding its first losing season since 1972 vanished quickly last Saturday under a deluge of "big play" points which produced a 34-6 victory for Lafayette before 18,000 fans at Fisher Field. It was the 118th game in college football's most-played series, the second straight triumph for the Leopards, but only their third in the last 14 contests. They finished the campaign at 7-and-3 while Lehigh was 4-and- 6. The annual Most Valuable Player award, determined by a vote of the news media covering the game, went to Lafayette flanker Jack Gatehouse who caught five passes for 115 yards and a touchdown. All of this activity came in the first half as the Leopards built a 24-0 lead. The Engineers shut him down completely after the intermission but the damage already had been done. Defensive end Brian Guttman, whose five sacks helped to disrupt the Lehigh aerial game, was second in the voting and offensive halfback Eddie Godbolt of the Engineers placed third. Godbolt had a brilliant day, the most successful of his career, with 37 carries for 187 yards, one reception of a pass for 26 yards and four kickoff returns for 79 yards, totaling 292 all-purpose yards. His 187 yards rushing, although gaining considerable attention, is far removed from Lehigh's one- game record. Jack Rizzo piled up 313 yards in 31 tries during a 48-19 rout of Lafayette in 1971 for the Engineer mark. Godbolt's tireless efforts made the final statistics somewhat surprising. Despite bowing by 28 points the Engineers led in first downs, 20-17, and yards rushing, 261-199, while Lafayette was on top in yards passing, 165-150, and total yards, 351-330. The back-breaking difference was in return yardage (punt (Continued on Page 1) 'Fast Break' Reception The Lehigh Home Club's fourth annual "Fast Break" basketball reception is scheduled for 9:30 p.m., Dec. 2 immediately following a Lehigh-Colgate game in Stabler Center. It will be held on the second floor above the main entrance with a $3 fee for adults and a $1 charge for children. This price, for anyone making advance reservations, also includes a ticket for the game in addition to refreshments. Greg Falkenbach, Suite 301- A, 65 E.
