Attach Your Mailing Label Here Likins, Rote Main Speakers During Expanded Program Lehigh's first expanded Student Recognition day awards dinner, honoring coaches and members of varsity squads, and other campus leaders, was held 5/5 at the Stabler Athletic and Convocation Center with 550 in attendance. In previous years a separate dinner had been held in December paying tribute to the fall teams but that was discontinued last year and all 22 varsity squads were feted 5/5. Dr. Peter Likins, Lehigh president, and Kyle Rote, Jr., the latest "Champion for a Better America" was selected by the J.G. Wilson Corp., headed the list of speakers. Recipients of awards: GENERAL J. Daniel Nolan Award, sponsored by Sigma Nu, to the most outstanding male athlete of the freshman class: Won by Marty Horn of Short Hills, NJ. The No. 3 quarterback in pre-season football drills last year, he became the No. 1 man and started five games, four of which Lehigh won. John S. Steckbeck Award, sponsored by Robert Kaufman, Lehigh '68, to the most outstanding female athlete of the freshman class: Shared by Shawn Steward of Columbus, OH, and Kirsten Yuracko of Scarsdale, NY. Steward was co-Rookie of the Year in East Coast Conference basketball and an all-league seclection. Yuracko starred on the title-winning tennis team last fall and on a winning team in the spring. In overall competiton she posted 16 victories against only three losses Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Awards for scholarship and athletic prowess: Won by Terri Guman of Bethlehem, PA, and Fred Ketcho of Wood-Ridge, NJ. Guman, majoring in bio-chemistry where she was a 3.60 academic average on a 4.0 scale, JIM NIEMEYER This is the final issue of The South Mountaineer for 1982-83, the last under the direction of Jim Niemeyer who's retiring as director of the Lehigh Alumni Association which publishes the paper. played three years of varsity basketball and was most-valuable-player and captain the last two seasons. Ketcho, who has a 3.32 academic average in industrial engineering, was co-captain of the men's basketball quintet and a four-year starter who concluded his collegiate career with 1,145 points and No. 5 position among Lehigh's all-time individual scoring leaders. Mary O. Hurley Award, sponsored by Ruth Hurley Vihon of Ada, OH, to the woman athlete who best exemplifies the spirit of sportsmanship in the athletic program at Lehigh, intercollegiate or intramural: Won by Diane Villwock of Voorhees, NJ. Vil- lwock was a four-year letter-winner in field hockey, a senior co-captain, and a Philadelphia Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women first-team all-star in 1982. Beta Theta Pi Cup for all-around athletic and scholarship attainment: Won by Bill Pertusi of Basking Ridge, NJ. Pertusi is a senior on the lacrosse team, an outstanding defender, and he carries a 3.30 academic average in electrical engineering. Hall Foundation Award, sponsored by John Newton Hall, Lehigh '30, tothe most outstanding male athlete of the senior class: Won by Darryl Burley of Pemberton, NJ. Burley, captain of the wrestling team, was a two-time NCAA champion and a two-time runnerup, one of the few men ever to reach the national finals four times. He won four EIWA championships. Hall Foundation Award to the most outstanding female athlete of the (Continued on Page 2) Golf Day Is May 23 Lehigh Home Club's annual golf outing and dinner is scheduled Monday, May 23, at the Bethle- hem Steel Club in Hellertown, Pa. Golf begins at noon with a shotgun start. There will be a reception at 5:30 p.m. and dinner at 7 p.m. Prices are $75 (sponsor including dinner, open bar reception, golf and cart), $50 (dinner, open bar reception and golf), $25 (dinner and open bar reception only), and $25 (golf and cart only). Hot dogs, free beer and soft drinks will be available for the golfers beginning at 10:30 a.m. and continuing through the tournament. Lehigh coaches, their staffs, and news media representatives will be Home Club guests. Keith Rust (867-3902) and Mike Bolton (861-3119) are co- chairmen.
