Teams 206-145-5 In 1980-81 Vol. 24 — No. 13 JANUARY 5, 1982 BETHLEHEM, PA. Cagers Captur^Tourney Title MAY 5 1982 Burley Erict&Midlands Jinx Basketball, Baseball Make Significant Gains Lehigh athletic teams cracked the 200-victory mark during 1980-81 competition with 14 of 22 varsity squads producing winning records, two finishing at .500 and only six losing more times than they won. The overall total showed 206 triumphs, 145 defeats and five ties for a .587 percentage. This was an improvement on the 1979-80 performance of 178-157-8 and .531. Men's basketball and baseball were chiefly responsible for the better record. The cagers, 5-20 one year earlier, came in with a 14-12 mark during their first winning season in 13 years. Baseball had a 14-13-1 record against a 5-18 finish in 1980. Lehigh basketball fans toasted a squad which posted more victories in 1981 than any Engineer quintet since 1917. The Little Miracle of Stabler Center, accomplished under the direction of head coach Brian Hill, lifted the Engineers up among the contenders for turnabout-of-the-year honors. Sixty-four years ago the 1917 Engineers were 15-4, under coach Roy Geary, and that's the Lehigh record for most basketball victories in a single season. The high water mark for triumphs since that time, until 1981, was 13 and that winning campaign in 1968 found the Engineers with a 12-11 total under coach Roy Heckman. Women's athletics also helped in the climb, totaling 74- 53-4 in 1980-81 against 63-53-4 one year earlier. Four of the women's seven varsity squads were winners, two were losers and one was even. Volleyball (23-11) was the "winningest" team on campus by a wide margin. Women swimmers, who finished the seasbn at 6-4, broke nearly every women's team record for the school. The top record^reaker was senior Sue Andrews, of Bethlehem, who set six individual marks and teamed up with others for three relay^ records. Rifle, coached1 toy Ron Pre- vost, posted a perfect 8-0 mark for the highest ' winning percentage. Other winners included women's tennis (12-1), indoor track (7-1), men's swimming (8- 2), golf (14-5), football (8-3), men's tennis (13:5), wrestling (10-4), women's lacrosse (12-5), outdoor track (7-3), women's volleyball (23-11), women's swimming, men's basketall (14- 12) and baseball (14-13-1). Ice hockey (9-9) and women's field hockey (8-8-4) were at the .500 level while squash (7-9), women's softball (4-6), soccer (6-10), women's basketball (7- 15) and men's lacrosse (3-10) followed. Individually the top performers came out ofthe intramural and recreation program as Andy Okada (112) and John Young (190) won National College Boxing Association championships at Reno, Nev. Karen Talbert, an outstanding member of the volleyball team, was acclaimed "Women Collegiate Athlete of the Year" by the Philadelphia Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women. Women's lacrosse, coached by Judy Turner, compiled a 12-5 mark and placed second nationally in Div. 2. The team defeated (Continued on Page 2) Wrestling On Television Upcoming delayed Lehigh wrestling telecasts, originated by WLVT-TV, Channel 39 of the Lehigh Valley: Lehigh vs Michigan: Jan. 10, WLVT (11 a.m.); Jan. 10, WITF, Ch. 33 of Hershey, Pa. LU Wrestler Tops Lewis; Weaver Wins Darryl Burley became the first Lehigh undergraduate to win a championship in the prestigious Midlands Tournament Dec. 30 as he nipped long-time rival Randy Lewis of the Hawkeye Wrestling Club with a takedown in the last second of their 134-pound final, 8-7. Another holiday championship was taken by 118-pounder Bob Weaver as he finished first at his weight in the Wilkes Open. He beat Tom Dursee of the New York A.C. in the finals, 5-3, also Dec. 30. Burley, of Pemberton, N.J., is a former NCAA champion sitting out the current collegiate campaign. He expects to return to the Engineer lineup in 1982-83 after a year of concentrating on freestyle competition. In the Midlands semifinals he defeated Keith Mourlam, unattached, 7-5. Weaver, of Easton, Pa., pinned Joe Spinazzola of Missouri in 3:39 during the semifinals at Wilkes. Roy Lobdell (158), of Deposit, N.Y., Benjy Dudek (177) of Kittaning, Pa., and Jeff Turner (190) of Easton, Pa., all won in the semis but lost in the finals. Heavyweight Pat Brown, of Bethlehem, Pa., reached the semis before losing. Three Lehigh wrestlers failed to participate as scheduled at Wilkes. Tom Husted rested an injured knee, Tommy Bold was ill and Bernie Brown didn't compete. Burley's victory snapped a long Midlands jinx for Lehigh stars, none of whom had been able to go all the way in that tournament. Tihamer Toth- Fejel won a championship but this was after he had graduated. Colin Kilrain, expected to wrestle, was sick. Rich Santoro (126) finished sixth and Pete Schuyler (134) failed to place. In the Albright Invitational, as Lehigh took its first tourney title since the 1975-76 season when the Engineers took the Kiwanis Classic at Roanoke, Va., the trio led the way to victories over Dartmouth, 46-41, and Albright, 68-62. Upon returning home coach Brian Hill's squad laced Lycoming, 72-55. In one other contest, since the last issue of The South Mountaineer, the Engineers led Navy at halftime before bowing, 74-62. Ketcho, with 39 points in the three-game winning streak, extended a free throw conversion string through his last 22 attempts and has made 27 of 28 in seven contests to rank among the national leaders in that category.
