Lehigh Eleven Bows, 14-6, As Turnovers Prove Costly (B&W Photo by ROB WEISSTUCH) LEHIGH tight end Jeff Hunt holds ball, despite hard hit by a defensive back, to score against Maine on six-yard flip from Tony Semler. McGraw Named Coach 'omen's Basketball OfWc Muffet McGraw, captain of a nationally-ranked St. Joseph's University basketball team and an assistant coach with the Hawks for the last two years, has been appointed head coach of women's basketball and soft- ball at Lehigh. McGraw, recommended for the dual post by Judy Turner Baxter, assistant director of athletics for women at the University, succeeds Maureen Frederick who resigned last spring. McGraw captained a St. Joseph's quintet in 1977 which had a 23-5 record and at one point was ranked No. 3 in the nation. Upon graduation, with a B.S. in sociology and a minor in business, she was head coach at Archbishop Carroll H.S. for two seasons. Her teams compiled a 50-3 mark including a 28-0 record in 1979 when she was voted Philadelphia Catholic League Coach-of-the-Year. In 1980 she played with the California Dreams of the Women's Professional Basketball League, returning to St. Joseph's as assistant coach when the league disbanded. She also was assistant coach of soft- ball with the Philadelphians and has been active as a player this summer in area leagues. She helped organize the West Chester Area Girls Softball League and coached teams four seasons. Maine converted two interceptions into touchdowns last Saturday to defeat Lehigh for only the second time in eight football meetings, 14-6, before 6,000 spectators at Orono. The Black Bears also picked off two other Engineer serials, and recovered a fumble, as Lehigh gave the ball away five times during a gruelling game played in 86-degree weather. Lehigh, losing an opening contest for the first time since 1969, held a 20-14 advantage in first downs and a 382-297 margin in net yards but couldn't crack through the Maine defense at crucial spots. The Engineer touchdown came on a seven-play, 78-yard march following Maine's first TD. Halfback Ed Godbolt of Bethlehem, PA, had pickups of two, five and nine yards, quarterback Tony Semler of Allentown, PA, hit split end Jim Davidson of Selinsgrove, PA, with a 40-yard pass and turned in a 16-yard run. Semler then threw six yards into the end zone where tight end Jeff Hunt of Nazareth, PA, made a difficult leaping catch. This sliced Maine's lead to 7-6 and it stayed that way as placekicker Jim Scott of Boons- boro, MD, missed the conversion try. On their next possession the Engineers drove again, moving from the 10-yard line to the Maine 18 only to give up the ball on downs when Semler was nailed on a fourth-and-two attempt. Late in the half Semler went to the sideline with a badly- bruised right arm. Bill Rambo, of Easton, PA, quarterbacked the team the rest of the way except for a late appearance by freshman signal-caller Marty Horn of Short Hills, NJ. Maine's highly-heralded all- everything running back, Lorenzo Bouier, paced all runners with 86 yards in 18 attempts but once again had to be content with something less than a 100-yard day. Lehigh's rugged defenses always have been hard on Bouier although this time he did manage a 12-yard scoring dash in the first period. The score came suddenly, after the Black Bears had been stopped at the Lehigh 16-yard line immediately following the opening (Continued on Page 2) Wrestling Tix Lehigh is selling 209 series tickets for the 1983 NCAA wrestling championships March 10, 11 and 12 at The Myriad, Oklahoma City, with a purchase deadline of Nov. 1.
