mm Vol. 24 — No. 11 NOVEMBER 24, 1981 BETHLEHEM, PA. Engineer Gridders Upset, 10-3 Cagers Defti^SCanadian Foe Charlie Blue Top Scorer Lehigh's young, rebuilt men's basketball squad made an auspicious debut Sunday winning 58-54 over McGill University of Montreal, in a pre-season exhibition game at Grace Hall. The Engineers open their regular schedule Dec. 1 at Hofstra and play their first Stabler Center game Dec. 3 against Temple at 8 p.m. The McGill result doesn't count in the season record or the statistics. Count or not, it was an opportunity for coach Brian Hill to get a good look at his players and he used nine members of his 15- man unit to full advantage. McGill, one of the better Canadian teams, was concluding a 3- game trip to the states. Only two seniors, captain Charlie Blue and a man returning to the basketball wars, Garry Howard, saw action for the Engineers. Blue, a starter, led Lehigh scorers with 15 points. Two juniors, guard Fred Ketcho (12 points) and forward Rick Kamin (eight points) had impressive games. Loss, At Hands Of Lafayette, Ends Playoff, Lambert Hopes Lafayette, completing a banner rookie year for coach Bill Russo, shut down Lehigh's powerful offense last Saturday for a 10-3 upset of the Engineers before 19,414 spectators at Taylor Stadium. The loss knocked Lehigh out of contention for a 1-AA playoff berth and a second straight Lambert Cup as the No. 1 medium-sized football team in the East. Lehigh had gone into action first in the Lambert race and sixth nationally in 1-AA, the top- ranked independent, which carries an automatic berth into the playoffs. The Engineers also ranked first in the national 1-AA offensive statistics, averaging 443 yards a game, and it was their inability to get an attack going which was most startling. They had to settle for 153 yards, 58 rushing and 95 passing. There was practically no effective running on either side and in the air Frank Novak of Lafayette outdueled Larry Michalski completing 19 of 37 passes for 164 yards. Michalski, victim of a hard rush all day, hit the target 11 times in 29 attempts for 95 yards and was intercepted three times. One of those interceptions came early in the fourth quarter and led to the only touchdown. Lafayette gained possession at the Lehigh 31 and moved to the 16 on a personal foul penalty against the Engineers. Novak threw eight yards to split end Frank Corbo on first down and halfback Rodger Shepko drove the final eight yards off the left side on the next play. This snapped a 3-3 draw, with 9:11 remaining, and the Leopard defense remained dominant the rest of the way. Novak was voted Most Valuable Player of the game by the news media. In addition to his passing he carried the ball 11 times for 28 yards, net, including a 31-yard run around right end which helped Lafayette reach the Lehigh 11 early in the third quarter before linebacker John Shigo of the Engineers recovered a fumble to halt the drive. Shigo, brilliant in defeat, was credited with 18 tackles during the overcast, cold and blustery afternoon. He also had two tackles-for-losses, broke up a pass and was a key figure on a thrilling goal-line stand near the end of the third period. He ranked second in the MVP voting. The stand came after Lafayette had reached a first down at the Engineer 3 on a pass from Novak to Corbo good for 25 yards. Shepko rammed his way one yard on first down, to the 2, but three other line smashes that followed still left the Leopards a couple of feet away from the goal line. Lafayette, playing field position football to perfection, allowed Lehigh to threaten only twice. In the first quarter the Engineers managed to reach, the Leopard 16 before stalling and settling for a 37-yard field goal from Mike Whalen. In the second they got to the Lafayette 28 before losing the ball on downs. In the second half they (Continued on Page 2) Lambert Cup Pts 1. Shippensburg 11-0 48 2. Delaware 8-2 43 3.
