Vol. 23 - No. 20 FEBRUARY 17, 1981 BETHLEHEM, PA. Lehigh Matmen D^Wn^Navy Before 4,000 Fails, 21-19 1981 (B&W Pholo by ROBERT Y0UNGENT0B1 UNDEFEATED LEHIGH co-captain Colin Kilrain en route to superior decision over George Fears of Navy. His five-pointer broke 16-16 deadlock late in meet and gave Engineers a 21-19 triumph. Kilrain Takes Tie-Breaking Bout Bonus points made the difference as Lehigh matmen, tuning up for this weekend's crucial date with Syracuse, outscored Navy before 4,000 spectators at Stabler Center, 21-19. Syracuse, rated No. 1 in the East ever since the Engineers dropped meets to Iowa, Iowa State and Wisconsin, will have an opportunity to defend that ranking Saturday (2/21) in another Stabler attraction. This will be the afternoon portion of a second split double- header with the grapplers spotlighted in the afternoon and men's basketball taking over at night as Lehigh cagers host Delaware. Navy, which dropped recent meets to Syracuse, 19-16, and Penn State, 17-15, staged the kind of battle most observers expected. The Middies split even with the Engineers in victories, each winning five bouts, but Lehigh made its triumphs worth more points. Pacing the Engineers, with five-point superior decisions, were co-captains Darryl Burley (134) of Pemberton, N.J., and Colin Kilrain (190) of Braintree, Mass. Bob Weaver (118) of Easton, Pa., and Jim Reilly (158) of North Wales, Pa., contributed four-point major triumphs. Tom Husted (126) did his bit with a three-point victory in a toss-up scrap. John Reich, Navy 167- pounder who pins just about everyone thrown at him, gave the Middies a six-point fall at 142 over Tom Bold of the Engineers, 13-5. That was it for Navy bonus points, though, nd four couldn't match Lehigh's six. It was only the fourth setback for Navy against 17 dual victories, the narrow losses to Syracuse and Penn State along with a 25-15 reversal at the hands of North Carolina State. Lehigh set the stage for its 10th victory in 13 meets as Weaver, Husted and Burley LEHIGH 21, NAVY 19 118—Bob Weaver (L) dec. Guy Zanti 14-6. 126—Tom Husted (L) dec. He trailed 3-0 and was locked in a bristling 6-6 scramble in the final seconds when he took the Middie captain down and added back points. Weaver won 14-6 over Guy Zanti and Burley demolished Dan Krall, 30-10. Navy's strong middleweight corps then took over as Kenny topped Bold, Frank Shaffer nipped Joe Hockman of Manassas, Va., 6-5 at 150; Reich pinned Dudek and Mark Phillips handed Jeff Turner his first loss of the season, 11-6, at 177. Reilly saved the day for Lehigh during this surge with an impressive 8- 0 shutout of Mike Rodgers at 158. It was only the second loss for Rodgers in 16 appearances. When Phillips and Turner left the mat Navy had overcome an early 12-0 deficit to pull even, 16-16, with two bouts remaining. Kilrain mauled George Fears, 25-8, for his five-pointer, but couldn't get the six-point fall he wanted to clinch at least a tie for Lehigh. Navy was still alive, trailing 21-16, with the heavyweight match still to be wrestled. Engineer veteran Drew Keiser, considerably bigger than Pat Ryan, his rival, bowed but only by an 8-3 margin. All-Sports Trophy Win For Mermen Lehigh's men's swimming team dunked Lafayette, 65-39, to give the Engineers a 3-1-1 lead in the 1980-81 All-Sports Trophy series. It was the 14th straight triumph for Lehigh over Lafayette in men's swimming. In the present standings Lehigh has registered triumphs in football, cross country and swimming.
