Attach Your Mailing Label Here 12-7 Game Ends Grid Drills Players from Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York were named recipients of special awards following completion of Lehigh's spring football practice. The drills ended with the annual intra-squad game in which the Browns came from behind to edge the Whites, 12-7. Two of the, awards were made covering this game with fullback Bob Romeo of New Providence, N.J., and end Mike Crowe, of New York City, LU Retains Sports Trophy Lehigh won the All-Sports Trophy, over Lafayette, for the 11th time in 14 years during 1979- 80 competition. The other three years were tied meaning that the Leopards still never have won the award outright. The latest totals were 7-4-1 in Lehigh's favor as spring sports teams nailed down the triumph with victories in track, golf and tennis, along with a split in baseball. Two finished at .500 and only seven lost more events than they won. The overall total was 190-144-6 as against 189-131-5 one year earlier. Indoor track topped the list with an undefeated 8-0 mark while golf was 19-2, wrestling 12-2, women's tennis 9-2 and rifle 9-2. The University's first honors convocation, according special recognition for outstanding academic achievement and to newly-elected members of 11 honorary societies, was held April 13 in Packer Church. Dr. Deming Lewis, Lehigh president, presided at the honors convocation and also was among participants at the SRD program. Lelinski won the first Hall Foundation Award as the most outstanding woman athlete in the senior class, the Mary O. Hurley Award for sportsmanship and the Lehigh Award as the most outstanding member of the school's softball team, and shared honors with Sharon Beltz of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, as most outstanding members of the women's basketball team. She earned 11 varsity letters at the University, four each in basketball and softball, and three in field hockey. McCormick, a linebacker credited with more than 400 tackles during a four-year varsity career, was recipient of the second Hall Foundation Award as the most outstanding male athlete in the senior class. Melone won the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Award for scholarship and athletic prowess, the Beta Theta Pi cup for all-around athletic and scholarship attainment, and the Alexander Hahalis Award as the most outstanding interior lineman on the varsity football squad. Jeff Vandemark, of Mahwah, N.J., won a pair of basketball awards. Wrestlers Rich Santoro of Bethlehem, Pa., and Jim Reilly of North Wales, Pa., shared two awards including the J. Daniel Nolan Trophy as the most outstanding male athlete in the freshman class. Thirty-seven other individuals received one award apiece. Women's tennis was the top winner in the team category, taking the A.C. Zettlemoyer Triple-A Award for academic and athletic achievement. The team had a 3.03 cumulative academic average. Student - Recognition Day ceremonies were under the direction of Greg Schulze, associate director for intramural athletics and recreation at the University, and he served as master of ceremonies at the banquet. DANIEL NOLAN AWARD, sponsored by Sigma Nu Fraternity, to the most outstanding male athlete of the freshman class: Co-winners are wrestlers Rich Santoro, of Bethlehem, Pa., and Jim Reilly of North Wales, Pa. JOHN S. STECKBECK AWARD, sponsored by Robert Kaufman, Lehigh '68, to the most outstanding female athlete of the freshman class. Won by Brenda Slrois of Lansdale, Pa., varsity goal-keeper in field hockey and lacrosse. EASTERN COLLEGE ATHLETIC CONFERENCE (ECAC) AWARD for scholarship and athletic prowess. Won by offensive tackle Dave Melone of Weston, Mass., first Lehigh football player to make the Associated Press and Kodak All-America teams in the same year. MARY O. HURLEY AWARD, sponsored by Ruth Hurley Vihon of Ada, Ohio, to the woman athlete who best exemplifies the spirit of sportsmanship in the athletic program at Lehigh, intercollegiate or Intramural: Won by Karen Lelinski of Levittown, Pa. She won 11 varsity letters, four each in basketball and softball, and three in field hockey.
