Vol. 22 — No. 20 FEBRUARY 12, 1980 BETHLEHEM, PA. Wrestlers Scuttle Navy, 25-10 Cagers Win; Jeff Tops 1,000 West Chester Routed, 84-57 Freshman Fred Ketcho's 20 points paced Lehigh's men's basketball team to an 84-57 rout of West Chester last Saturday during a doubleheader in the Stabler Athletic and Convocation Center. The Engineer women dropped an 81-64 verdict to the Rams in their part of the twin bill. In j men's JV action Lehigh romped, 69-44. This was the third outing for the men's team during the week. Earlier the Engineers played well while losing at LaSalle, 90- 79, but couldn't match the pace during an 82-70 defeat at the hands of Rider. The return of Jeff Vandemark, senior forward from Mahwah, N.J., boosted Lehigh hopes and he did his best with 20 points against LaSalle, 17 against Rider and 16 against West Chester. He became only the ninth Lehigh cager to reach the 1,000- point career scoring mark in the Rider contest and with 16 additional markers in the West Chester triumph he emerged from the week's play with 1,026 and No. 9 position. Vandemark won't challenge Bill Griffin's all-time mark of 1,316 set from 1976 through 1979 but he has an opportunity to break into the all-time Top Five. Trailing Griffin are Charley Brown with 1,311, Bob Fortune 1,242, Norm Brandl 1,231, Johnny Waters 1,099, Hank Wisniewski 1,084, Ray Green 1,072 and Eddie Cahn 1,054. The North Jersey sharpshooter began the season with 826 points and the 1,000 plateau within easy reach but an ankle injury Jan. 8 at Rutgers sidelined him after he had advanced his total to 964. There were fears that ligament damage might sideline him for the rest of the year but he managed to get back into action after missing eight games. Action was halted in the Rider; (Continued on Page 2) State Senate Lehigh's 1979 football team, national runnerup in the NCAA's 1-AA division, was among athletic squads cited Jan. 22 by the state senate at Harrisburg, Pa., for "tremendous achievements and for pride and honor brought to Pennsylvania." Also cited were Penn State, Temple, Widener, Carnegie- JEFF VANDEMARK, with Coach Brian Hill, after he reached the 1,000-point scoring mark against Rider. Alumni, Friends Honor Footballers Quarterback Rich Andres, linebackers Bruce Rarig and Jim McCormick, offensive tackle Dave Melone and defensive tackle Eric Yaszemski were winners of special awards as alumni and friends honored the 1979 Lehigh University football squad. Speakers at the head table included Preston Parr, dean and vice president of student affairs at the University; Bill Leckonby, director of athletics; John Whitehead, head coach; C. Keith Rust of Bethlehem, Pa., national president of the Alumni Association, and Mark Par- Mellon, Pitt Steeler and Philadelphia Eagle gridiron squads, and the Pittsburgh Pirates, world series winners in baseball. Lehigh had a 10-3 season last fall, was runnerup nationally in the 1-AA division and Whitehead was voted coach-of-the-year by ABC-TV and the Chevrolet Division of General Motors. Yaszemski, of Harrison, N.J., received the annual "Big LU" award as the individual "contributing most to the squad" during the season. Andres, of Millville, N.J., was named most outstanding offensive back on the squad and McCormick, also of Millville, was honored as the most outstanding defensive back, a category which also includes outside linebackers. Melone, of Weston, Mass., was named most outstanding offensive lineman and Bruce Rarig, of Whitehall, Pa., was honored as the most outstanding defensive lineman, a category also including inside linebackers. Special awards also went to Melone and McCormick noting their selections to 1-AA Ail- American teams and Mc- (Continued on Page 2) Win 7 Bouts At Annapolis; Brown Registers 85th Victory Winning seven bouts and getting a draw in another, while losing only two, Lehigh wrestlers carved out a 25-10 victory over Navy last Saturday and strengthened their role as odds- on favorites to take the annual EIWA tournament which the University hosts Feb. 29 and March 1. The Midshipmen, who went into action with an impressive 14- 4 record and had the Engineers at Annapolis, Md., where Lehigh traditionally has difficulty, had little chance this time. Coach Thad Turner's charges had trouble in some of the bouts but rolled to their ninth triumph in 11 duals to complete a routine sweep of service academy opposition. One week earlier they had steamrollered Army in Stabler Center, 32-4. Senior 190-pounder Mike Brown, of Bethlehem, Pa., made his visit to crabtown doubly significant by clinching the team victory with an 11-7 edge over tough Ed Myers and posting his 85th career win. This is only one away from the Lehigh school mark of 86 lifetime triumphs established by Mike Frick from 1973 through 1976. Frick was 86-9-4. Brown, 12-1 this winter, is 85-10 with three dual meets and the eastern and national tournaments still ahead of him. All will count in his overall total. Colin Kilrain, of Braintree, Mass., put Brown in position to nail down the meet when he started slowly but came on strong to whip Mark Phillips in their 177- pound clash, 11-2. Kilrain is the top winner on the squad this season with a 13-1 mark. Drew Keiser of Sinking Spring, Pa., the third member of Lehigh's "Big Three" among the heavier weights, finished off the Mids with a 3-2 edge over Chris Garner. The 300-pound Keiser racked up his third straight victory and has an 8-5 seasonal mark. He's 3-0 against his only EIWA opponents, From Wilkes, East Stroudsburg and Navy. As a matter of fact Lehigh matmen are 25-5-2 against EIWA rivals this winter and only Pete Schuyler, among the regulars, has been beaten by an EIWA opponent. Schuyler, of Bound Brook, N.J., was upset 9-7 at 126 pounds by Popple of Wilkes in the opening meet Dec. 1. Schulyer, undefeated since he moved up to 134 pounds, made Dave Halladay of Navy his fifth straight victim, 11-6, and now has a 7-2 mark on the year. Other Engineer winners at Annapolis were 118-pounder Rich Santoro (11-2) of Bethlehem, Pa., 142-pounder Darryl Burley (12-1) of Pemberton, N.J., and 158- pounder Steve Bastianelli (6-2-1) of Georgetown, Del. Dean Dilillo (1-2) of Chester- land, O., at 150, and Roy Lobdell (1-3) of Deposit, N.Y., at 167, were the only Lehigh losers. The Engineers' three remaining duals are against Temple, Cornell and Syracuse, all EIWA members. LEHIGH 25, NAVY 10 118—Rich Santoro, L, dec.
