Attach Your Mailing Label Here Baseball Split Keeps Lehigh On Top In All-Sports Race All-Sports Trophy competition, between Lehigh and Lafayette, resumed last Friday with the Engineer baseball team splitting a pair with the Leopards. Freshmen Jeff Sperring and Joe Lanzoni combined on a shutout in the first game at the Saucon Fields, to win 2-0 before Lafayette retaliated with a 10-7 edge in the nightcap. Sperring, of Pittsburgh, Pa., went eight and one-third innings to make his first collegiate triumph a big one, and Lanzoni finished up when the Leopards threatened in the ninth. Lanzoni is from Trenton, N.J. Outfielder Chris Dax unloaded j a grand slam homer in the second contest, pulling Lehigh into a temporary 7-4 lead, but the Leopards jumped on Lanzoni in this one to pull out the decision. Students Will Be Honored At Grace Hall; New Award Student Recognition Day, when Lehigh men and women are honored for special achievements in athletics during the 1979-80 academic year, is scheduled Monday, May 5, at Grace Hall. The University's first honors convocation, according special recognition for outstanding academic achievement and to newly-elected members of 11 honorary societies, was held April 13 in Packer Church. Dr. Deming Lewis, University president, presided at the honors convocation and also will be among participants at the Student Recognition Day festivities May 5. Flagpole ceremonies at noon, a part of the SRD program for many years, are being discontinued. Recipients of awards normally made at the flagpole will be recognized at the evening dinner although only 10 presentations are to be made at that time including: The J. Daniel Nolan award to the most outstanding male athlete of the freshman class; The John S- Steckbeck Award to the most outstanding female athlete of the freshman class; The Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Award for scholarship and athletic prowess; The Mary O. Hurley Award to the woman athlete who best exemplifies the spirit of sportsmanship in the athletic program at Lehigh, intercollegiate or intramural; The John Newton Hall Foundation Award to the most outstanding male athlete of the senior class; The John Newton Hall Foundation Award to the most outstanding female athlete of the senior class; The A. C. Zettlemoyer Triple-A Award, for athletic and academic achievement, to the varsity athletic squad with the highest overall academic average; The University Service Award for outstanding service to Lehigh; The President's Trophy to the living group scoring the highest number of points in intramural sports competition, and The Bosey Reiter Award to the most outstanding leader of the senior class. The John Newton Hall award to the most outstanding woman athlete of the senior class is being given for the first time. The Hall Foundation last year awarded a similar trophy to the most outstanding male athlete of the senior class and is adding the women's award. Both will be presented annually. Prior to the SRD evening presentations the recognition to other award recipients will be made to men and women in baseball, basketball, boxing, cross country, field hockey, football, golf, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, sailing, softball, soccer, squash, swimming, tennis, track and field, volleyball (Continued on Page 2) Spring Grid Drills Underway Spring football practice at Lehigh, postponed in March because of rain and snow, began Apr. 8 with 85 candidates. The Engineers are drilling weekdays at 4:30 p.m. and Saturdays at 10 a.m. on the Saucon Valley Fields. The annual spring game, which traditionally marks the end of practice, is scheduled Saturday, May 3. Lehigh, national runner-up in the NCAA's Div. 1-AA last season has 31 lettermen although two of them—offensive guard Larry Miksiewicz of Kenilworth, N.J., and linebacker Bruce Rarig of Whitehall, Pa.—are excused from spring drills while recovering from off-season surgery. Six of 11 returning offensive lettermen were starters in 1979 including split end Mark Yeager of Madison, N.J., tackle Joe Scheuer of Newtown Square, Pa., center Mark Sitar of Trumbull, Conn., halfback Joe Rabuck of Philadelphia, Pa., fullback Bob Romeo of New providence, N.J., and Miksiewicz. Seven of 20 returning defensive letter-winners were starters including end Mike Crowe of New York City, tackle Rich Titus of Wilkes-Barre, Pa., linebacker Dave Dorrow of Bethlehem, Pa., halfbacks Lou D'Annibale of Allentown, Pa., and Charlie Marck of Bethesda, Md., safetyman Keith Conley of Rock- ville, Md., and Rarig. Lehigh opens the 1980 season Sept. 13 at Maine and also travels for contests against Pennsylvania, Army, Davidson and Lafayette. Home games are against Colgate, Delaware, Bucknell, James Madison, Rhode Island, and Northeastern.
