Engineers To Meet Eastern Kentucky Lehigh's football team bids for its second national championship in three seasons Saturday (Dec. 15) against Eastern Kentucky in the Tangerine Bowl Stadium at Orlando, Fla. The kickoff will be at 1:30 p.m. EST and the game will be telecast nationally by ABC. Coach John Whitehead's squad won its semi-final test last Saturday at Murray, Ky., 28-9 over Murray State University, while Eastern Kentucky was outlasting Nevada Reno in double overtime, 33-30. Murray State defeated Eastern Kentucky during the regular season, 24-7, while taking the Ohio Valley Conference championship. In December of 1977 the Engineers took national honors in Div. II with a 33-0 rout of Jacksonville, Ala., State in the Pioneer Bowl at Wichita Falls, Texas. They moved up into the newly-created 1-AA Division in 1978, went 8-3 and barely missed a playoff bid, then compiled a 9-2 mark during the 1979 regular schedule and were invited to this year's post-season tournament. This is the fourth time in seven years, since the playoff format was unveiled in 1973, that Lehigh has been a participant. The team lost first-round games in 1973 and 1975, went all the way in 1977 and is hoping to duplicate that feat this season. Last Saturday's impressive performance at Murray State gives Lehigh a fourth straight victory under playoff pressure, and an overall mark of 4-2 in the post-season competition. Senior quarterback Rich Andres, of Millville, N.J., paced the Engineers before some 10,000 spectators, scoring one touchdown and passing for another and winning an ABC-TV award as offensive player-of-the-game. Linebacker Jim Dunaway, of Murray State, was voted defensive player-of-the-game by the ABC-TV selectors. Other offensive leaders for the Engineers were halfback Jeff Bernstein of Randallstown, Md., fullback Bob Romeo of New Providence, N.J., and split end Mark Yeager of Madison, N.J. Andres completed eight of 13 aerials for 114 yards, one of them a 9-yard scoring strike to Yeager, ran three yards for a touchdown and generally ran the Lehigh offense flawlessly. Lehigh rolled up 266 yards on the ground, in addition to its 114 in the air, for a 380-yard afternoon. Bernstein was the game's top runner with 11 carries for 80 yards. Romeo had 68 yards in eight attempts, one of them a 37- yard scoring dash in the final minutes. Halfback Joe Rabuck of Philadelphia, Pa., the team's seasonal rushing leader, contributed 40 yards on 11 tries including a 1-yard plunge which opened the scoring. With the offense putting 28 points on the board, and the defense maintaining its season- long brilliance, the Engineers had things pretty much their own way. They led 19-9 in first downs, 266- 95 in yards rushing and 114-88 in yards passing for a total yardage (Continued on Page 2) Alumni Activities The Lehigh Alumni Assn. is finalizing plans for affairs tied in with Saturday's championship football game at Orlando, Fla., between Lehigh and Eastern Kentucky. Lehigh gatherings will begin Friday night at the Court of Flags Motel, Orlando, game headquarters. Saturday morning reserved tailgating for Lehigh rooters is slated for Lot 'M' on Rio Grande St. between Church and South Sts., in the vicinity of the Tangerine Bowl Stadium, site of the game. A post-game celebration is scheduled for the Court of Flags Motel immediately after the contest. For additional information phone 861-3135 in Bethlehem.
