Vol. 21 — No. 5 OCTOBER 10, 1978 BETHLEHEM, PA. 17-Point Blast In First 6:24 Too Much For Delaware 11 JVs Romp At Kutztown Five different players scored touchdowns as Lehigh's junior varsity football squad overwhelmed Kutztown State, 39-19, for its first victory following an opening 20-16 loss at West Chester. Lehigh's defense got things rolling early at Kutztown. Ken Allwood of E. Orange, N.J., recovered a fumble on the Bears' 10 and two plays later quarterback Brian Dehler of Lake Grove, N.Y., passed six yards to halfback Steve Plucinsky of Wallington, N.J., for a touchdown. Early in the second period Ken Rosen of Elmwood Park, N.J., blocked a punt and quarterback Larry Michalski of Pittsburgh, Pa., fired a 37-yard scoring pass to Mike Whalen of South Plain- field, N.J. Paul Anastasio of Camp Hill, Pa., recovered a fumbled punt and the Little Engineers drove in from short range with Greg Manion of Delmar, Pa., running the final yard for a 21-0 lead. Before the halftime intermission Mark Hull of Mechanicsburg, Pa., turned in a 35-yard dash to the Kutztown 6. The threat stalled but Roger Penske of Gladwyne, Pa., kicked a 33-yard field goal, and Karl Nielsen of Wyckoff, N.J., tackled a Kutztown runner in the end zone for a safety and a 26-0 margin. In the third period still another quarterback, John Parrish of Stamford, Conn., completed a 50- yard pass to Whalen and then threw 16 yards to Tim Miller of Allentown, Pa., for a TD, and Mike Tuohey of North Syracuse, N.Y., finished the Lehigh scoring going 60 yards into the end zone on a punt return. Lehigh took over at the Delaware 27 and on the fifth play fullback Mike Ford, of Kansas City, Mo., bulled into the end from one yard away. Lehigh led, 10-0. On the return of the ensuing kickoff the charged-up Engineers popped the ball-carrier so hard he coughed it up again and Mark Evanko of Madison, N.J., recovered for Lehigh at the Delaware 29. A roughing-the-passer penalty helped advance the ball to the two and halfback Vince Rogusky of Catasauqua, Pa., took a pitchout from quarterback Rich Andres of Millville, N. J., and moved around right end across the goal line. Iobst, who had a perfect kicking day with three conversions and two field goals in two tries, added the point. The Engineers were up, 17-0, after only 6:24 of action in an incredible opening surge. It was a score which followers of each team found almost impossible to Hens' Blue Review Viewers of WHYY-TV, Ch. 12 of Philadelphia, may watch highlights of the Lehigh- Delaware football game Friday, Oct. 13 at 10:30 p.m. on the Blue Hen Review program. believe as it was flashed across the nation on the ABC-TV national scoreboard. Delaware, although stunned, fought back but was stopped at every turn until Lehigh got into the fumble act with only two minutes remaining in the half. The Hens took over at the Engineer 16 and scored on a pass with 1:53 left. They kicked off, forced a return punt and added a 46-yard field goal with 24 seconds to go, cutting their deficit to 17-10 at the intermission. When Lou Mariani scampered 45 yards off the right side for a TD with 9:24 remaining in the third stanza, and the Hens added the conversion to pull even at 17- 17, the momentum appeared to be going Delaware's way. The Engineers regained their poise quickly, however, and the game settled into a punting duel. Delaware made one more serious bid, moving from its own 39 to a third-and-three at the Lehigh 20 before linebacker Bruce Rarig of Whitehall, Pa., sacked quarterback Jeff Komlo for a three- yard loss. This forced a fourth- down field goal try by Brandt Kennedy, who already had connected on the 46-yarder just (Continued on Page 2) Game At A Glance LEHIGH 17 0 0 10—27 Delaware 0 10 7 0—17 Iy—FG 41 Iobst. 1^—Ford 1 run.
