Syracuse scored an impressive 26-12 victory. Former Eastern champion John Janiak, and Gene Mills and Guy Dugas, combined for more than half of their team's points as the Orangemen finished the season at 11-5-1. Lehigh, which was coming off impressive wins over Penn State and Army, not to mention a team- wide bout with the flu, was never in the race and ended up at 9-7. The Engineers were without freshman flash Colin Kilrain, of Braintree, Mass., who is expected to be recovered from an ankle injury by next weekend. Lehigh lightweights Steve Bastianelli and Doug Hertrick had been coming on strong in late season, but both were victims of major decisions at the hands of Mills and Dugas. Mills came up with a takedown and three-point nearfall in the second period after Bastianelli (9-7) had taken a 1-0 lead and added another takedown and nearfall in the final round for a 12-1 victory. Janiak, who was an Eastern titlist two years ago before sitting out last season, finished the year at 19-1 by flattening Engineer Joe Hockman in 4:45 with a chancery and arm bar. Hockman was inserted at 158 so Jim Leiser could go up a weight to fill in for Kilrain. But Leiser gave up a first-round takedown and last-round reversal to Pete (Continued on Page 2) Cagers Divide, Earn Home Court Berth Lehigh split a pair of East Coast Conference basketball games last week, finished in a tie with Bucknell and Delaware for second place in the western division, but had to accept No. 4 playoff position because both the Bisons and Blue Hens had superior overall records. The Engineers did earn home court advantage for their opening playoff game (Monday, Feb. 27) and the opponent was Rider College. It was Rider which kept Lehigh from claiming second place all alone in the final standings. The Broncos edged the Engineers at Trenton last week, 55-53, before Lehigh came back with a Saturday triumph over visiting West Chester, 78-68. Lehigh topped Rider earlier in the campaign at Grace Hall, 74- 67. In last week's game Lehigh made a valiant comeback bid in the second half overcoming a nine-point Rider lead to tie the game with less than two minutes left. Rider never trailed and went out to an early 14-4 lead before Lehigh managed to cut the lead to one by halftime. Rider spurted out to a nine- point lead in the second half and still held a nine-point edge at the 10-minute mark when Lehigh began its comeback. Wednesday, Feb. 29: Rider- Lehigh winner at Lafayette, W. Chester-Bucknell winner at Delaware. Friday and Saturday, March 3- 4: Semi-finals and finals, inter- divisional play, at Kirby Field- house, Lafayette. Lehigh got a double win from speedster Jim Kappel and some impressive performances from its middle distance runners Saturday to overtake Bucknell and win the first East Coast Conference Indoor Track and Field championship. Bucknell, the conference's defending outdoor champion, took an early lead with some unexpected strength in the weight events. Lehigh slowly chipped away at the Bisons' big early lead and finally clinched the victory with a first place finish in the two-mile relay. That relay team not only set Lehigh's fieldhouse record of 7:52 flat, but each member also picked up valuable points along the way. "There are a lot of things you can look to when you win a meet of this type," Engineer coach John Covert explained. "But as you go back over it, it's often those seconds and thirds you don't expect that mean the difference." Freshman Tom O'Shea, of Park Ridge, N.J., proved his coach's point. The freshman, who was the leadoff runner in the 2- mile relay, had kicked from fourth to second in the 1,000-yard run overtaking two Bucknell runners in the process. Rick Devine, of Westwood, N.J., who ran the second leg, also grabbed a close second to Bucknell's George Buckheit in the mile. Buckheit, perhaps the premier distance runner in the conference, did the mile in 4:12.2 with Devine a step behind. Chris Nunan, who ran the third leg of the 2-mile relay, also placed fifth in the 600, while Andy Hubsch, of Westfield, N1J., ran the anchor and also got a second in the 880. But it was Keppel, of Bethpage, N.Y., who was Lehigh's big point man. He covered the 60-yard dash in 6.4 with teammate Jim Dutt just a tick behind in third place. Kappel took a full second longer to cover 60 yards in his next race, but this time there were high hurdles in the way. Engineer pole vaulter Dan Doyle, of LaGrangeville, N.Y., was an odds-on choice to win the pole vault and did so easily. He managed to match his own field- house record of 15-6 for the fifth time.
