Vol. 19 — No. 22 MARCH 22, 1977 BETHLEHEM, PA. m ?■?■ Fast Start For Lehigh Baseball Squad ! Wrestlers 7th In National Tourney 'Satisfactory' Grid Drills Concluded Spring football drills, which concluded March 10 at Lehigh, were tabbed "satisfactory" by head coach John Whitehead despite record temperature lows and an unexpected amount of snow which kept the squad indoors much of the time. The Engineers did a lot of work on the artificial turf inside the spacious Saucon Field House while holding drills early to avoid conflicts with spring sports and the semester break vacation. "We kept to our schedule pretty well," says Whitehead, "getting the things done that had to be done and accomplishing most of our objectives. It was a satisfactory spring...very encouraging. "I was especially impressed with the players' attitude. They worked very hard and seemed to have a 'closeness' which wasn't always in evidence last fall. We're a little younger than we were and maybe that had something to do with our enthusiasm. "Our annual intra-squad game, for instance, certainly was an improvement over the 1976 one." The Browns, with freshman quarterback Mike Andres of Millville, N.J., leading the way, staged a second-half comeback to down the Whites, 12-8, in Taylor Stadium. The game, played under overcast skies and despite bone-chilling winds, was concluded in semi-darkness. Veteran quarterback Mike Rieker, of Catasauqua, Pa., had the Whites only nine yards from a winning touchdown as time expired. Andres, who spent part of last season with the varsity squad before finishing with the JVs, ran six yards for a touchdown in the third quarter and passed 30 yards to tight end Dave Rarig, of Whitehall, Pa., for the winning TD with only 2:10 left in the fourth. Some effective running by fullback Mike Ford, of Kansas City, Mo., and halfback Pete DeLuca, of Newark, N.J., balanced the Brown attack. Rieker, the Engineers' No. 1 quarterback, had taken the Whites 65 yards early in the first quarter for their score, running the final four and adding a two- point conversion dash for an 8-0 advantage. Following the contest four (Continued on Page 2) LIEBERMAN McCORKEL BROWN Lieberman, McCorkel, Brown Place Lehigh placed three men, including runner up ■167-pounder Mark Lieberman, in the annual NCAA Wrestling Tournament last weekend at Norman, Okla., to finish first among all eastern teams and seventh nationally. Don McCorkel, a,senior from Hershey, Pa., finished third at 190 and Mike Brown,;a freshman from Bethlehem, Pa., was fifth at 177. Lieberman, the only Engineer finalist, is a sophomore from Allentown, Pa. Lehigh's chances fjor a higher finish were drastically reduced on the second day of the tournament when 134-pdunder Bob Sloand, of Landings N.J., was forced to withdraw because of a knee injury. Sloand, surprisingly unseeded despite a fourth-place finish in the tournament last season, was the first-day standout as he eliminated top-seeded Steve Hunte of Iowa 3-2 in overtime after a 9-9 scramble, and Pete Boucher of Oregon State, 11-6, with a takedown and two near- falls in the final minute. The Lehigh star had three falls and challenged for a special trophy for that specialty. Honors went to Johnny Jones of Iowa State, who also had three, but in less time.
