Vol. 20 — No. 8 NOVEMBER 1, 1977 BETHLEHEM, PA. Rieker (Record 384 Yards) ■ Leads Lehigh Past Bucknell Engineers Rojit Bisons, 47-13. For Sixth Victory In 8 Games JVs Trounce Lafayette Lehigh's junior varsity football team whitewashed Lafayette, 28- 0, in its final test of the season to finish with a 3-and-2 record. The game was played at Fisher Field. Quarterback Lou Pierro of Hudson, N.Y., twice connected with halfback Bob Romeo of New Providence, N.J., on short scoring passes in the first quarter. Halfback Steve Plucinsky of Wallington, N.J., tallied Lehigh's other TDs, both on four-yard right end sweepts. The first Plucinsky TD was set up as Keith Conley of Rockville, Md., returned an intercepted pass 44 yards to the Lafayette 8 and a penalty pushed the ball to the 4. The second came after the Little Engineers, coached by Joe Sterrett, lined up in a surprise "shotgun" formation and the center snap went directly to Romeo in the tailback position. He passed 21 yards to Pierro and the touchdown came three plays later. LEHIGH JV 14 7 0 7—28 LafJV 0 0 0 0—0 L—Romeo 3 pass from Pierro. Iobst kick. L—Romeo 2 pass from Pierro. Iobst kick. MIKE RIEKER 8-For-8 Lehigh's undefeated women's field hockey team upped its record to 6-0-3 last week with victories over Muhlenberg, 5-0, and LaSalle, 3-2. The women's volleyball squad also helped Lehigh fashion a perfect week with triumphs over Moravian, 3- 0, and LaSalle, 3-1. Lehigh athletes went 8- for-8 the week. There also were victories of 47-13 over Bucknell in varsity football, 28-0 over Lafayette in JV football, 16- 46 over Lafayette in cross country and 6-2 over Lafayette in soccer. Runners, Booters Give LU Early Lead In Trophy Race Soccer and cross country victories last week gave Lehigh first blood over Lafayette in the 1977-78 All-Sports Trophy scramble. Coach Tom Fleck's booters came from behind to trounce the Leopards, 6-2, and Coach John Covert's runners coasted to an easy margin, 16-46, with three Engineers tieing for first place. Mike Robinson, of Philadelphia, Pa. scored twice in the soccer match while Tim McDaniel, of Liverpool, N.Y., came off the bench to spark the comeback with a goal and an assist. In the cross country run Larry Ullrich of Amherst, N.H., Dave Rohr of Rochester, N.Y., and Jim Davis of Maplewood, N.J., all representing Lehigh, tied for top honors in 25:58.8 over the 5-mile Metzgar Fields course. Other Engineer placers were Dennis Sprick of Clifton, N.J., fourth; Dave Friedfeld of Merrick, N.Y., sixth; Rich Devine of Westwood, N.J., seventh, and Kevin Talhelm of Hellertown, Pa., ninth. The soccer summary: LEHIGH 2 4 — 6 Lafayette .-. .1 1 — 2 Lehigh goals: Robinson 2, Nichols, McDaniel, Malik, Skiff. Assists: McDaniel, Shook, DiMassa, Aduhene. Lafayette goals: Gummeson, Clabotti. Assist: Peddie. The cross country summary: 1. Larry Ullrich, Lehigh; Dave Rohr, Lehigh; Jim Davis, Lehigh, tied in 25:58.8; 4. Dennis Sprick, Lehigh 26:17; 5. Larry Kulig, Lafayette 26:22; 6. Senior quarterback Mike Rieker, nearing the end of a brilliant two-year varsity career, smashed an individual Lehigh record and helped the team collect two more last Saturday as the Engineer footballers crushed Bucknell before a Freshman Parents Day crowd of 11,500 in Taylor Stadium, 47-13. It was Lehigh's sixth victory in eight starts and, coupled with New Hampshire's stunning 21-20 upset at the hands of Rhode Island, may have been enough to catapult the Engineers into first place in the weekly Lambert Cup rating. Lehigh whipped Rhode Island easily, 42-16. Rieker had an unbelievable afternoon against the Bisons as he completed 16 of 28 passes for 384 yards and four touchdowns, picked up nine yards running for a 393-yard total offense, threw a two-point conversion pass and scored a two-point conversion on a run. His passing yardage topped the Lehigh record of 325 established by All-American quarterback Kim McQuilken in 1972 as he completed 29 of 41 attempts against Colgate. McQuilken's now in his fourth season with the Atlanta Falcons. This unprecedented outburst enabled the Engineers to set Lehigh standards for most yards passing in one game (463, topping a mark of 390 set against Lafayette in 1973), and total yards in one game (682, bettering a record of 664 established against Lafayette in 1971). Rieker was going coast-to- coast against the Bisons, throwing touchdown passes of 34 yards to halfback John Morrissey of Monroe, Conn., 42 yards to split end Steve Kreider of Reading, Pa., 7 yards to halfback Lennie Daniels of Coxsackie, N.Y., and another to Daniels covering 49 yards. Daniels also tallied on a 9-yard run, and took a conversion toss from Rieker, for a 20-point performance. The sixth Engineer TD came on an 8-yard gallop by fullback Mike Ford of Kansas City, Mo. Place- kicker Kenny Wood, of Pennington, N.J., added two extra point kicks and a 38-yard field goal before being injured late in the third quarter and going to the sideline. This prompted Lehigh to attempt two-point conversions after its last three touchdowns and the Engineers made them all. Rieker, who had a 70-yard pass to Daniels nullified by a penalty, averaged 24 yards per completion. His longest gain was 57 yards to tight end Don Van Orden of Hawthorne, N.J. Bucknell's offense made a valiant effort to make a game of it, moving 58 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter and striking on a 41-yard pass play for another in the third, but the Bison defense folded up under Rieker's barrage. When your total team offense is a fairly respectable 238 yards, but the rival quarterback picks up 393, you know it was a mistake getting off the bus. That's what happened to the Bisons. Bucknell's hopes of a third straight upset against Lehigh dissolved suddenly late in the second quarter after the visitors appeared ready to take a 6-3 lead into the locker room at intermission. Lehigh, which had gained the upper hand on the field if not on the scoreboard during the second period, suddenly caught fire. With the ball at midfield halfback Dave Aprill, of Fords, N.J., swept right end for 13 yards, Rieker hit Van Orden on a 25-yard toss and Daniels did the rest, getting yardage on a reverse and then bulling nine yards through left tackle into the end zone. Only 1:54 remained in the half. The Engineers kicked off, forced a return punt which gave them the ball at the Bison 42, and Rieker lofted a pass into the end zone where Kreider made the reception. Wood, whose conversion try had missed after the first Lehigh TD, added this one and it was 16-6 with 58 seconds still to play before the intermission. On their fourth play of the second half the Engineers struck overhead again, Rieker throwing his 34-yard touchdown to (Continued on Page 2) Game At A Glance LEHIGH 3 13 15 16—47 Bucknell 6 0 7 0—13 L-FG 38 Wood.
