Vol. 18 — No. 16 JANUARY 27, 1976 BETHLEHEM, PA. SsSSssissggSSi Wrestlers Regain Winning Stride 1975 Winning Year (148-105-6) 12 LU Teams Topped .500 Twelve of 20 varsity athletic teams posted winning records for Lehigh during 1975 as the Engineers piled up 148 victories against 105 losses and six stalemates. Lehigh stars gained national and sectional honors topped by wrestlers Mike Frick and Mike Lieberman, and football ace Joe Sterrett. These individual and team achievements shared attention last year with the informal opening of a mammoth new field house in the Saucon Valley Fields athletic complex. Only in the annual All-Sports Trophy warfare, against neighboring rival Lafayette, did the Engineers fall just a bit short of their objective. They didn't win the cup outright, as has been their custom, but they did share it with the Leopards. This award, set up by the student governing bodies in 1967, goes to the school winning the most regularly-scheduled varsity dual events between Lehigh and Lafayette from fall through the spring seasons. Lehigh and Lafayette tied during 1974-75 competition, 6-6. The Engineers took football, cross country, swimming, golf, lacrosse and tennis decisions while bowing to the Leopards in basketball (twice), track, baseball (twice) and soccer. Lehigh has won this trophy seven times while sharing it in 1971 and 1975. Lafayette still is looking for its first winning year in the cup competition. Results in women's varsity events between Lehigh and Lafayette aren't counted in the standings because the trophy scoring doesn't include them and it would take action by the student governing bodies to incorporate such a change. Neither school had coed undergraduates when the trophy was established. If a change in the scoring is advocated Lehigh quite possibly also will ask for a modification in the ground rules concerning basketball and baseball where the teams regularly clash twice a season. One-half point per victory in those sports, instead of one, might be suggested. During nine years of All-Sports Trophy action Lehigh has built up a commanding lead over Lafayette, 66-42. Mike Lieberman, Frick and (Continued on Page 2) B8.W Photo) MIKE FRICK of Lehigh struggles to hoist Terry Reese of N.C. State in their 158-pound bout. Frick, the defending NCAA 134-pound champ, won 9-3. Cagers Lose Three; Green Top Scorer Lehigh's basketball team moves into its East Coast Conference schedule this week hoping to snap a 4-game losing streak. The Engineers (6-7) bowed to nationally-ranked Rutgers, 102- 87, Drexel, 69-53, and Scranton, 84-60, in their most-recent tests. A knee injury to Charley Brown of Morristown, N. J., against Holy Cross, kept him out of the Rutgers game. He played briefly against Drexel and came back as a substitute against Scranton to score 15 points. Ray Green, a sophomore from Washington, D. C, played well in all three contests and took over the team scoring lead with 145 points. He's also the rebound pace-setter with 129. Coach Brian Hill's squad played its best game against Rutgers, before 2,500 Grace Hall fans, piling up 56 points during a (Continued on Page 2) BASKETBALL SCORING, REBOUND LEADERS G Fg Fp Tp Avg Reb Green 13 50 45 145 11.1 129 Milligan 12 57 25 139 11.5 62 Brown 12 59 19 137 11.4 76 Clifford 13 59 19 137 10.5 38 Griffin 13 41 43 125 9.6 21 Belfieid 13 19 16 54 4.1 18 Brandenburg... 13 17 14 48 3,6 89 RAY GREEN RUTGERS Sellers 8-1-3—17, Dabney 9-2-4—20, Bailey 11-1-3—23, Jordan 8-0-0—16, Copeland 4-2-4— 10, Anderson 5-1-3—11, Hefele 0-1-2—1, Conlin 0-0-0—0, Palko 0-0-0—0, Kleinbaum 0- 2-2—2, Scherer 1-0-0—2. North Carolina St., Yale, Bucknell Defeated; Frick Whips Eli Champion, 8-3 Shaking off a string of five straight losses, most ever for a Lehigh wrestling team, the Engineers regained stride last week with impressive triumphs over Yale and Bucknell, both by 31-10 margins, and North Carolina State, 26-9. Coach Thad Turner's grapplers hiked their seasonal mark to 8-5 in their quest for a 24th consecutive winning campaign. Mike Frick of Hamburg, N.J., Don McCorkel of Hershey, Pa., Nils Deacon of Howell, N. J., Mike Newbern of Virginia Beach, Va., and Lance Leonhardt won three bouts apiece in the sweep. Tihamer Toth-Fejel of Cupertino, Calif., and Armin Vaihinger of Doylestown, Pa., each won twice in two tries and Guy Talarico of Nutley, N.J., broke into the win column with two triumphs in three chances. Toth-Fejel, most pleasant surprise of the 1975-76 season, leads the Engineers with a 12-0 record. McCorkel is 12-1, losing only to national champion Larry Bielenberg of Oregon State, 2-0. Frick had the week's biggest victory when he drubbed Jim Bennett of Yale at 150 pounds, 8-3, in a highly-ballyhooed clash of defending NCAA champions. Frick won last year at 134 and Bennett at 142. The Lehigh co-captain went all the way up to 158 to dispose of North Carolina State's Terry Reese, 9-3, while also winning at 142 by a fall over Rick Strouse of Bucknell. Newbern, a national prep school champion at 158 last year for Blair Academy, entered Lehigh last Tuesday and won bouts Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. The Frick-Bennett bout, an exceedingly rare match-up of defending NCAA title-holders, was the big attraction Saturday and 3,000 were on hand for the afternoon Lehigh-Yale meet. They saw their favorite take charge with an escape and takedown, after a scoreless opening period, to win decisively. Bennett, on the defensive throughout, never was in the bout. McCorkel, with a pair of falls, raised his pin total to seven and needs only two more for a new Lehigh dual meet record. Ed Eichelberger flattened eight opponents in 1956 and John Illengwarth equalled that mark in 1964. LEHIGH 26, N.
