Vol. 17 — No.^s^r / ^ , JANUARY 22, 1975 BETHLEHEM, PA. Matmen Sweep Midwestern Rivals; Four Falls For Mark Lieberman Team Boosts 75 Record To 8-2-1 Five Lehigh wrestlers didn't lose a bout last week as the Engineers swept past four opponents on a midwestern tour. Coach Thad Turner's highly- ranked grapplers trounced Indiana, 33-6, Indiana State, 27-15, John Carroll, 31-6, and Pittsburgh, 24-9. This hiked their seasonal mark to 8-2-1 and they have dual meets this week against Bucknell, Slippery Rock and Syracuse, the last two weekend events in Grace Hall. Freshman Mark Lieberman, at 167 pounds, highlighted the 4- meet midwestern sweep with four falls. Others posting four victories were 118-pounder Lance Leonhardt, 150-pounder Mike Frick of Hamburg, N. J., 142- pounder Pat Sculley, and heavyweight Terry DeStito. Leonhardt, a Bethlehem wrestler who sat out last season after transferring from the Naval Academy, returned with the leading individual record on the team (10-0). DeStito is 9-0, Frick 7-0, Sculley 9-1, Mark Lieberman 8-1, Mike Lieberman 9-2 and Don McCorkel, of Hershey, Pa., 8-3. Frick, EIWA 118-pound king two years ago, weighed 145 during the trip and handled four 150-pounders impressively, giving the team its first victories of the season at that weight. Mark Lieberman had a spectacular journey with falls over Tom Powell of Indiana (3:38), Dee Campbell of Indiana State (6:15), Ken Meditz of John Carroll (4:55) and John Chatman of Pitt (4:50). Only Chatman, an experienced veteran rated among the better EIWA performers, gave him any trouble. The Panther star went for broke early, taking Mark down, exchanging reversals and then getting a near-fall for a 6-2 advantage. The Engineer frosh ace reversed again, before the first period ended, escaped at the start of the second and took Chatman down for a 7-6 lead before flattening him with an arm tieup and bothy „ press. Mark completely dominated his earlier bouts. Aside from Marty Lynn and Tihamer Toth-Fejel, who lost, only Frick had any difficulty at aHIIIIIIHIIIIIHlllllllIHIIIIHIIIIIIIIHliHIIIHinillllllllllllllllllMIIIIIIIIIIIHIIIHIIIIHIIIIHIlllIIUIIItllllllllHIIHIHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIllllll IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIMIIIIIIIIIIJ s jE | EIWA Tournament The 71st Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association Championships § will be held at the U S. Frick, after leading throughout, fell behind Dan Wiley in their 150-pound scrap 5-4 and needed a reversal in the final half-minute to get the triumph. Moving over to Terre Haute, Ind., the Engineers encountered a tough Indiana State aggregation directed by Gray Simons and this meet went 15-15 through the first eight bouts before McCorkel and DeStito settled the issue with falls. Lehigh's margin of victory, 27- 15, was slightly better than Penn State's showing against the Sycamores at University Park, a test won 22-11 by the Nittany Lions. John Carroll, at Cleveland, O., is a Division III wrestling power which got in over its head against the Engineers. The Blue Streaks, coached by Tony DeCarlo, won only at 134 and 158. They pushed a 6-foot, 360- pounder, Jo-jo Bertelone, out against DeStito and the Lehigh co-captain, scaling 212, was equal to the task. Terry handled him exactly the way he upset 6-8, 330-pound Robin Whisman of Iowa State. He LANCE LEONHARDT 10-0 Record sparred through a scoreless opening period, escaped starting the second, held his bigger opponent to the mat long enough for a time point in the third, allowed an escape and avoided trouble in the final minute. Roba, of Pitt, had a sizeable height and weight advantage, and more agility than Bertelone, but DeStito's skills and experience led to a decisive 10-4 triumph. Indiana threw a 190-pounder against the Engineer heavyweight and DeStito, marking a rare occasion when he had a weight advantage, polished him off in just 1:29. Baxter Brown of Indiana State, 6-5 and 235, was a formidable foe who led briefly 4-3 in the second period before DeStito reversed him and got a fall at 4:09. The undefeated Leonhardt had his most trouble with Kevin Nellis, a Pitt freshman with a lot of stamina and potential. Lehigh sliced its deficit to 10 at 67-57, with 4:57 remaining, but couldn't get any closer. Milligan, a sophomore from Ramsey, N.
