Hartzell (3-1) Leads Baseballers Trackmen Sweep Quadrangular BRIAN HILL Brian Hill Will Coach Cage Varsity Brian Hill, 27, a native of Newark, N. J., today was named head basketball coach at Lehigh. The appointment was announced by Preston Parr, vice president for student affairs at the University, and Bill Leckonby, the director of athletics. Hill, whose appointment becomes effective July 1, joined the Lehigh athletic staff last September as assistant basketball mentor. During the 1974-75 season he directed the Engineer junior varsity to an impressive 12-5 record. He succeeds Tom Pugliese, of Dunellen, N. J., who resigned as head coach last month following three years of service. Hill is a graduate of Kennedy College in Wahoo, Neb. Before coming to Lehigh he was an assistant coach at Montclair, N. J. State College, Piscataway, N. J., Township High School and Clifford Scott High School in East Orange, N. J. Teams under his direction compiled a cumulative 86-37 mark. Son of Fred J. Hill of East Orange, N. J., and the late Mrs. Hill, the new Lehigh head coach was born in Newark and raised in East Orange where he attended Holy Name elementary school and Our Lady of the Valley High School. He was graduated from Kennedy College in 1969 with a bachelor of arts degree in physical education. Buddy Jarrell (195-4) won the javelin on his final throw with John Vargo (194-8) finishing second. Lincoln Diah (57.0) and Jeff Mitchell (57.6) were fourth and fifth in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles. The 4 x 100 meter relay of Jim Dutt, Al Dance, Mike Green, and Ron Williams ran 43.3 seconds for third. Steve Bigach (48-6) and Bill Roman (46-6) gave L.U. a 1-2 in the shot-put. The 1500-meter run was a disappointment with Stellan Thoren (3:54.7) third and Wayne Rogers (4:01.0) fourth. Thoren was jostled severely and Rogers injured a groin muscle in warm up. Green (22-6'/2) was another disappointment with third in the long jump with Dave Stauffer (21-5) sixth. R. Williams (48.8) posted a fourth in the 400-meter dash with Bob Williams (50.8) sixth. Dance (11.0) and Dutt (11.3) were fifth and sixth in the 100 meters running into a stiff wind. Thoren (1:57.0) and Mitchell (2:07.3) were fourth and sixth at 800 meters. Mike Kaskiw (16.8) led (Continued on Page 2) Dance, Thoren Win Twice During Rout Double winners Al Dance and Stellan Thoren paced Lehigh to victory in a quadrangular track meet Apr. 5 in which the host Engineers' score more than doubled any of their opponents, Trenton, East Stroudsburg and Bloomsburg. The wind played a factor in many of the events. Dance took first place in the 100 with a time of 9.8. He followed this victory with another in the 220 in the time of 23.5. Thoren won the 880 in 2:07.0 and the mile in 4:38.0. He also placed third in the 3 mile. A third double winner was Len Jenkins of ESSC. Jenkins won the long jump with a distance of 22- 2%. He copped the triple jump with a distance of 45-10. ' The scores were Lehigh 83V2, Trenton 35V2, ESSC 31V2 and Bloomsburg 31V2. The high jump and pole vault were canceled due to wind conditions.
